we've bought a viking fibreline (1960s?) and there are a couple of patches of damp. Is it really expensive to get someone to do the repairs? We just don't have the workspace to do anything.
Any caravan workshop is going to charge £40 per hr or more & as the job is labour intensive yes it will be really expensive. Fixing damp on an old caravan is really only viable if you can diy.
How bad is the damp? if there are no really soft spots you should get away sealing the outside seams.
oh dear, I thought it might be something like that. Well the wood inside is crumbling and there are bubbles on one of the side panels so I suppose that's pretty damp and it needs a respray. Not sure what to do now.

Can you post some photo's of the damage on here. Wizard is your man as is "the fixed it club"
From my limited experience, damp repairs tend to look much worse than they really are. As has been said, it is very labour intensive but is also very basic woodwork skills.
If you havn't got it already I would reccommend getting the Haynes caravan manual.
The only reason I gave up was because I went Lorry Driving. When you are away from early monday till saturday morning and having the bare minimum legal 45hours weekly rest, You want to use that as family time and recouperating time. Hence I gave the project up.
If I had continued I would have a very decen't Van now and not scrabbling about looking for a dirt cheap (or freebie) project to start again.
Kernowman, have only just had time to have a glance at the blog - very interesting. A very nice van. Looks a lot of the same problems we have. Looking forward to reading in detail. What did you end up doing with it? Thanks so much for posting. p.s how do I get to wizards website? I clicked the link in your blog but google wouldn't recognise it.

Like I said, that wasn't actually my van, but one of the fix it club members van's.
Mine ended up being sold to a neighbour who is using it as a mess hut whilst seeing to their horses. Its a shame really because it could have been a nice van.
