I have noticed that the overhead cupboard doors in my caravan have become "miss aligned". This has occured suddenly to the extent that the magnetic catch on one of the doors no longer line up. I was away last weekend and we had a few vistors. When we were packing up I observed that the jocky had sunk into the ground. Is it possible the I have bent the chassis? Threre were about 6 adults and three childred in the caravan at one point. Can anyone offer me some advise please.

Move the caravan & see how it is then. The corner steadies must only be wound firmly onto the ground, they must not be used to lift & level 'van or the body could distort causing what you describe. You won't have bent the chassis.

Thank you for your reply Tentz. I must admit I was given some rather duff information as it turns out. I was told that it was OK to use the corner steadies to level the caravan (i am new to all of this) I was rather out of level and now I fear I may have ruined my caravan. Can the chassis be re-jigged at all?

There are 3 support points on the caravan chassis, the two road wheels and the jockey wheel. The corner steadies are designed exactly what they were intended for... to steady the caravan only and eliminate any rocking. Therefore when you are levelling the caravan you use the 3 points as mentioned. You apply a ramp for one of the main wheels to level side to side and the jockey wheel from front to rear and nothing else. The steadies must NOT be used as jacks to either level the caravan or aid in repair of a puncture where a proper lifting jack is required and must be used directly under the axle behind the wheel. If you do use the steadies as jacks you will without doubt twist the chassis, and once this achieved you will have problems opening and closing windows, doors and cupboards which is evident that you now have problems with. On older caravans the chassis was much heavier which was fabricated from box section steel then welded together to make the chassis frame but as cars got lighter they also had to re-design caravans to make them lighter too. The chassis is now manufactured from galvanised pressed steel that is much lighter but not so robust. If you have twisted the chassis then I would suggest that rectifying it would be virtually impossible and even if it is then I would imagine it to be very costly as they would have to place the caravan on a jig and re-twist it back which could make the problem even worse. The best thing to do is get professional advice on this and I don't think that a company that undertakes servicing would be able to rectify a twisted chassis.

In my opinion you should not use the corner steadies to level the van.

I think it would be virtually impossible to twist the chassis by screwing the corner steady. They are not designed to appy any great force. At best I suspect you would break the steady or push it through the floor.

If the chassis is bent you would have trouble with all cupboards, doors & windows but the previous correspondent is mistaken in reading this into your post. You only say cupboards. How many?

Much more likely there is some distortion in the cupboards.Move the catch.

Take caravan for a tow of a few miles, then unhitch & park it, levelling as explained by tango. You may well find the problem has corrected itself.

You can buy levelling chocks for wheel from caravan shop or you can make your own, also carry several short lengths of timber, bits of old roof joists, to go under corner steadies on soft uneven ground to provide a firm base & to avoid steadies being wound down too far, they should never be almost vertical but have 1 or more blocks of wood under them.

Also keep a foot length of timber to stand jockey wheel on soft ground.

I think you would bend or break the steadies before damaging the chassis. Unless you manage to lift the wheels right off the ground, the suspension will still be giving some support to the van and it will be inclined to resume its normal shape when the steadies are raised.

As millermicm says, its much more likely there is some distortion/missalignment in the cupboards.

I bow to your superior knowledge all  !

I fear that I may have gotten myself into a state of panic (being so new to caravanning and having invested a significant amount of cash)

Rightly or not (and I hope I do not upset anyone on this website) I got some advice from another forum that suggested that I check the cupboard door hinges. Guess what? I checked the hinges and lo and behold they where loose !! A quick session with the Phillips and all in the worls was good.

I sincerly apologise to all who took the time to respond to my post if I may have "over egged the pudding" but believe me, at the time I truly thought that I had broken my caravan. I assure you that all the advice that I have been given has been taken on board. The next time that an "expert" gives me some advice (such as levelling with the steadies) I will direct him (or her) to this great forum.

They say that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. But I now think that a little knowledge coupled with bad advice from those who should know better is a lot worse.

I am not being bitter as I realise that the resonsibility was mine to ensure that I had all the correct info before making the step change between tent and caravan. However, I wish that those who offer advice would at least consider if they are worthy of the trust of a newbie (as this website has been)

I look forward to many years of happy caravanning now that I have found the support of the UK CAMPSITE(ers).

I only hope that one day, in the not to distant future, that I can help others as you have helped me

Cheers all.

My very real suggestion is this:

If you dont know for sure, please dont offer your opinion. Opinions are like belly buttons, everyone has one but they serve absolutely no purpose.

When someone takes the time and lowers their guard in order to admit to and reveal the need to ask for help. The least you can do is be sympathetic to their needs and carefully consider your answer.

Please take the time to listen to what people have to say rather than just wait for a lull in the conversation so that you can make your point.

I would disagree on that, ask a question on a forum or several forums & somewhere among the answers you should find the solution to your problem. Have the good grace to accept the comments/opinions as they come.

Also most questions asked on a forum are subjective, so there is no right or wrong answer and the answers are simply opinions.
