On our way home from Cornwall last week the hitch damper burst, meaning it was clonking its head off all the way home to mid Wales. No problem I thought Simply go to a caravan dealer and buy a new one. Each and everyone of them wanted in excess of £60 for a replacement damper. even on good old ebay they are stupidly expensive.
Answer. the hitch on my Elddis is made by KNOTT. They also supply hitches for Ivor Williams farm trailers. My local Ivor Williams dealer sold me a new damper for £26 inc VAT.
I dont mind firms making a fair profit, but the difference Illustrated is just plain profiteering. Knott also make many axle and brake parts, also available from your local Ivor Williams stockist.
Did you not work out a heavy trailer is business, a caravan leisure? albeit many parts are interchangeable, it depends from which market you buy it from... jockey wheels are another prime example
The new damper is the exact replacement for the tow hitch. ie, in this case 750-1300kg. its EXACTLY the same, and a third of the price. Dont try and defend the caravan dealers, they are making huge profits in the name of leisure.
The first Alko Coupling I sold some one wondered in they had been to the local caravan company for a replacement Alko 161S coupling as I deal with trailers I did not stock them (expensive, nasty couplings sold to caravan manufactures on a chassis) and I called our supplier and they gave a price allowing me to sell at £165 and 2 days delivery he snapped my hand off as the caravan dealer had quoted £525 + 3 weeks delivery.
Put the name caravan into an item's title and wham, the price is instantly double that of anything similar elsewhere. Just look at kitchen stuff in a dealership, plates and drainers etc. Stupidly expensive!
I fully agree. We caravanners are seriously ripped off, from LPG to servicing --ripped off all the way. Look at what they charge to attend a caravan show which is afterall only a shop window for sales of vans and accessories.!!!
Grrrrr

------------- there are 10 types of people in this world, those who understand binary and those who don't.
It's just the same with koi pond equipment, a lot of it is same as swimming pool stuff eg..... pumps and skimmers but if the work koi is on the box the price is trebled
You will always find cheaper than your local caravan shop by searching the net or even in you local discount shop. Example, my local Range shop sells trailer bits, lights, breakaway cables etc, at one third of price of local caravan shop for exactly the same items.
However, this doesn't mean I would wish to see my local caravan shop disappear as it is competitive for some items & convenient. As always, shop around & with the internet, its easy.
Its going off the subject slightly ,but my neighbor was a buyer for a well known opticions , she told me that most frames were bought in at £4 to £9 and then sold to the public for £90 to £180 plus lenses.A lot of people would not go near a discount opticion ,and pay £40 to £60 for exactly the same thing .The typical response from people is that I am not getting cheap glases near my eyes, little do they know.
unfortunatly people will sell for whatever they can get,
Its down to us what we are prepared to pay. if the buyer knows nothing about the product they will probebly pay the price.
As Tentz above, Thats what makes the internet the fantastic tool it is, even if you dont buy from the internet you can find out a fair price.
