Well unfortunately i left handbrake on over winter and brakes seized up. I followed advice and got mobile caravan repair company to look at it and they persuaded me to have a full service at cost of 130 quid. And they'd inspect the caravan to give me what i thought was piece of mind.

The repair man then phoned a day later to tell me the brake was knackered and that he'd have to completely replace it at cost of mind80 quid additionally to the service charge of 130 quid.

On taking the van back and setting off on holiday with wife, baby and foster child we were stopped car due to burning clutch smell and very bad noise from engine of car. We then called AA out. AA. told us bar is fine but brakes were binding on the caravan. Imagine my disbelief. At being told this. Informed him brakes had been changed on none side of caravan to

Name and shame!!!!!!

Sounds like his incompetence wight have knackerd your clutch, or at least taken a fair chunk of usable life out of it

Did you go straight for the mobile man or did you try freeing the brakes yourself first.  If they are stunc on through lack of use, get underneath and hit the drums with a hammer.  Be prepared, it may take some time....not a 5 min job.

Just watch Ice road truckers and see how thay deal with trailer brakes stuck on (in -30F)

Just before you go naming and shaming, a few questions.

Are you POSITIVE that you had correctly set the brake to off?

Are you POSITIVE that the breakaway cable had been properly routed so as not to pull tight and partly apply the brakes?

How long did you press on with the van dragging behind you? I would expect to notice long before it cooked the clutch or did engine damage to your car.

Yes if the brakes were incorrectly adjusted then it is not good, but there are many many other possibilities.

I've never towed the caravan with my current car and therefore have no idea what it should have felt like. I drove for about 16 miles and was disappointed with the lack of ease with which my current car was towing the caravan as I specifically bought the car to tow caravan more effectively than my previous car. Handbrake was definitely off and break away cable was connected correctly. Hand brake was not on when attempting to push it. The Brake Drum was supposed to have been changed to brand new one but quite clearly both Brake Drums are rusty and old.

I wont name and shame unless Repairer refuses to play ball with my requests to remedy the situation. I also work for local council so will threaten with action from my colleagues in Trading Standards Dept. It is clearly unacceptable to be employed to carryout work and repairs and not perform them fully.
