Have spent a couple of days away and due to the position of the 'van, I noticed a glint of sunlight coming from the front central window (the large one of three). At first I thought that there was the residue of an adhesive strip (but as nothing has ever been attached to the window that seemed unlikely). It was about 4" long and in an almost perfect straight horizontal line. There are gaps in the mark and on closer inspection, appears to be a series of smaller blemishes.

We at first cleaned the inside window, to no avail, and then moved outside and cleaned the outer of the two panes but again making no difference to the blemish. It appears that the outer pane is cracking from inside ie the sealed area. It's not too unsightly, noticeable if you are sitting in a certain seat and with the sun in a particular aspect.

Can anyone advise whether this is normal for a 5 year old 'van? Apart from replacing the window (expensive) is there any remedial work I can undertake to prevent this cracking from spreading? Is it likely that the window will be covered by the 6 year bodyshell warranty (or does this cover water ingress only?). Could anyone explain the likely causes for this to occur?

regards

Defender

I have had two windows go on caravans than 5 years old. In each case it looked as though the windows had been shot at with and airgun. However on inspection this was not the case and there was no damage to the surface of the window in or out. The series of cracks in the outer skin were just like bullet holes without the hole. In each case the windows cracked in this way during extremely hot weather and I suspect (and others have confirmed this in caravan magazines) that using the roller blinds to keep out the sun resulted in over heating of the window so that it burst and in doing so produced these bullet hole type cracks. Two in a small front window and one in a big side window. I have noticed that the manufacturers have a sticker on the windows now indicating that during hot weather the blinds should only be used to the half way position. Sorry if I have gone on a bit but could it be that your window has split as a result of over heating. I think you will find that they are not covered under a water ingress warrantee. They can of course be replaced under your caravan insurance policy which you will probably need to do as they are expensive at £250 upwards.

You can drill a very small hole at the end of the crack then fill with silicon, this stops the crack spreading in that direction, although it may continue in another direction if your unlucky!!

Thanks gents,

The window blinds are only pulled down at night when the 'van is in use and very occasionally during the day to prevent strong sunlight entering the 'van*. (* Probably no more than half a dozen times in 5 years)

The problem with drilling a small hole is that the cracking is occurring on the inside of the outer pane, There is no visible nor obvious damage on the outside of the outer pane, so this would limit the ability to repair the cracking due to the minimal gap that I would have to work within.

Not very encouraging to read that you have had problems with 3 windows  Is your 'van subject to a particular aspect when not being used ie south-facing, sun in the morning/late evening etc.
