Just got home yesterday and when we got back and was emtying the fridge I noticed that the freezer had started to defrost. Only ever had this problem once before and found that a spade had come off the relay in the back of the car. I checked the 12S socket on car and found everything OK so started to check out the van, that's when I found this 'problem'.

When I unscrewed the two halves of the 12S plug besides it obviously needing replacement I found that the 12S grey 7 core cable on my van is in fact only 5 core!!

The two wires missing are the brown one to pin 5 which the diagrams I have say is for 'reverse sensor' and usually spare anyway so I'm not too bothered about that but the other one that is missing is the blue wire to pin 2 which is for battery charging.

So, does my 'van, a 2003 Swift Charisma 550 not charge the battery on the move or does it have a circuit inside the van to charge it some other way through the green wire on pin 4. I can't see how that can be cos as pin 4 is permanent live it would be taking power to the caravan battery even without the engine running.

I've been thinking about converting to 13 pin for a while and now I've decided it's time to replace the 7 pin plugs now might be the time to do it. I've been looking about though and can't seem to find any 13 core cable at any of the dealers or accessory shops and it seems very expensive on the net. I'm not too convinced about cramming the existing two 7 core cables into 13 pin plugs and sockets although folks have told me this is fine.

any thoughts??

regards

Bit of an update.....

The fusebox in the caravan on the end of the grey cable has a fuse for battery charging (marked on the lid) so now I'm wondeing if it's split off the fridge supply inside the fuse box.

Have been studying 13 pin wiring diagrams and there is no allocation in a 13 pin plug for battery charging.

also found this plug on a well know auction site which says it'll take two cables into a 13 pin plug. Just need to find one for the car now......

I've answered my own question now. ...What a Pratt.....I.Think I should dig myself a hole.....

I've discovered via the link below that there is a 'habitation relay' in the caravan which runs the battery charging from permanently live pin 4 (green wire) when the engine is running. A wiring diagram for the caravan would be useful........

http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/towbar_electrics.shtml

just need to decide what to do about the 13 pin bit now......

Looking at this http://www.westerntowing.co.uk/acatalog/Caravan_13pin_Wiring_Diagram.html
I'd guess that pin 9 would be for battery charging .

With regard to your current 12s wiring see Here and look at the 1999 pin allocation diagram .

Hi Wizard

thanks for your reply. there is no battery charging connection in the 12S plug on my caravan, there is not even a wire in the grey cable for it. It seems that post 1999 battery charging is done via the permantly live feed to the caravan pin 4 green wire in the old 12S plug and switched via a 'habitation relay' inside the caravan when the engine is running. As per the link you marked as 'here'. I'd already found that very same link after I made my original post.

Thanks again

regards

I believe Sargents can supply ready wired 13 pin plug/cable for some Swift vans, might be worth checking with them.   They also sell just the cable at a reasonable price.

If buying a plug and socket, do buy good quality ones, I can recommend the "Menber" one.

OH converted our van with cable from Sargents, not a complete kit. He made the join to the 2 x 7 cables just inside the van.
