Just finished repair of caravan and have noticed a little more give in the wall than compared with original solid bits?? is this due to the insulation (polystrene sheet, not blue closed cell stuff). Frame is obviously a lot more solid now it consists of wood!!

The other question is tyres, they appear brand new, but I am concerned as to their suitability, I think they are car tyres.... The van itself is light(ish) a 1989 Swift corniche 14/2

Car/van tyres are usually fitted as long as they have a high weight/loading on them.Its to do with the strength of the walls of the tyre and the load they can take and of coarse the max speed they can run at.

It is advisable to use reinforced commercial tyres on a caravan and any competent tyre company will also agree if you ask. Also, if you ask your insurance company about tyres they are very likely to inform you that car tyres are not fit for purpose on a touring caravan and that If you have to make a claim the policy will possibly be deemed as void. The reason is because standard radial car tyres are manufactured differently in that when you are cornering the tyre will roll towards the wall due to the flexible steel banding giving extra grip to the tyre tread. As there are only two tyres on a single axle caravan, if the tyre rolls then you lose the instability and the inevitable can happen by creating a snaking effect thus giving poor traction and finally loss of control.

If the caravan all up weight is less than 900kg you will be ok with car tyres. I'm guessing they are 155 or 165/80x13?

It's okay people advising to fit car tyres on a caravan but if you have problems and then happen to be involved in accident it's not their loss, it's yours! So at the end of the day do the right thing and ask for professional advice from the right people who do know.

as said take them to a tyre dealer and have them inspected,if tyres over 5 years they should be changed anyway.and its cheaper than a motorway breakdown with a flat tyre.

 hi , does anyone know what the tyre presure should be on a 1994 compass image 360/2 van the tyres are 165/80 R13. just aquired van and cant find any ref to ;press; in the paper work.

Caravan tyres get old long before they wear out .
Our tyres still look like new but on the last service we were advised to renew them due to sun damage .We will be buying covers for the new ones !

That is because it is ok to fit car tyres of the sizes I mentioned earlier provided caravan is less than the weight I mentioned. For example 155/80Rx13 are always 79T, ie rated at 437kg each at 118mph so more than adequate at 900kg at 60mph.

Certainly tyres should be checked regularly for cracks & perishing & changed after 5-6yrs regardless of wear.

My 1990 Swift Corvette runs on car tyres, as specified in the manual. 165R13 82T. running at 32 psi. Other vans run on strengthened commercial van tyres, usually at much higher psi. eg 60 psi.

You need to check the manual, or find the info online. I used to have it all saved, but lost the HD it was on, typically without a backup.

With respect to the wall feeling like it has a bit more give. This depends on how it has been repaired. In my case I glued new plywood over the blue stuff and onto the new wood frame. It was never fully rigid until the ply was glued on top of the repair, but a bit of give will not be a problem, as long as it is water tight. My roof now has ply glued over the white expanded polystyrene between the wood frame too. It is solid, with no give.

Many thanks for the comments, very helpful I would like to know if anyone out there has a copy of the 1989 Swift manual, the tyres are less than 12 months old but the previous owner had them fitted.

Regarding the wall, I think when I repair the left hand side I will try to keep the original blue stuff, the white polystrene just isn't as rigid.

All the vans i have bought had what looked like new tyres,i trust no one and have always renewed the tyres unless ive saw a receipt.
