hello

i have a very old caravan, it has 2 roof lights set up to run off a 12v battery - but i don't have a 12v battery and only intend to use it on a site. is there any way that i can run the 12v roof lights off of a normal plug socket?

i hope the above makes sense - i don't really have a clue about electrics - if you hadn't noticed!! :)

thanks
sarah

ps caravan doesn't have electric - we use a hookup lead with plug sockets on the end.

You can't run a 12 volt system from 240 volts as the amp rating would be much higher and the wiring is less than capaple of dealing with such current. Therefore the options are to either run off 12 volt via a leisure battery or change to 240 volt mains. If you choose the latter then you would have to remove the original 12 volt lights, replace with 240 mains lights and have the caravan rewired complete with an MCB box to trip the circuit which is a legal requirement. The cheapest option is just to buy a leisure battery to feed the 12 volt circuit and use the mains power to keep the battery fully charged.

Some years ago I bought an old caravan without mains electric. That also had 12v lighting, and the fridge and the gas fire required 12v for the ignition, plus there was a 12v water pump.

The previous owner had some weird set up where I think he ran it off a car battery placed outside the caravan with wires running through the window or something. Anyway, not knowing negative from positive I took the caravan to a local caravan repairer and he fitted a leisure battery under the front seating and wired it all up properly for me. Most of the wiring was already there so all he had to do was hook into it. Took less than an hour from taking the caravan in to getting it back again and all he charged me was for the battery and a few quid for his time.

I only camped for a couple of days at a time and the 12v system hardly used any battery at all. I used to take the battery out and recharge at home occasionally and on a leisure battery fast charger it took a few minutes!

I thought of using a tent type EHU lead but I found the 12 volt system plus gas for heating and the fridge was more than adequate.

As suggested, getting a leisure battery fitted may solve any problems you have. You could still use EHU for other stuff if you wanted...in fact you could charge your battery from that although it probably won't need charging too often.

Erm....not quite, V=IR, as the voltage increases the current decreases (resistance of cable constant).

however still not an option here, the 12V wiring isn't insulated to the correct level for 230

A battery and charger is a possibility, this would give you lights in the event of the bollard (or site) tripping

the 12V power supply linked to by micheal is also an option, depends on what other 12V kit you have to run (pump, heating fan etc??)

Thanks very much everyone for all your advice and help here - it's much appreciated as I really don't have a clue about these things... I think I will just get a leisure battery as you suggest, rather than try and meddle with something I don't understand.

Thanks for the taking the time to reply - really good of you all

sarah
