Hi All,

I've searched a few forum posts regarding water heaters but can't seem to find our specific problem.....

We've bought a quite old caravan (our first van!) and as some of you may know from previous posts it's stored and sited in Normandy, so the only time we get to fix/repair things on it is when we are there....

We just got back from a long weekend and are having trouble with our cascade 2 water heater.

On the electric panel there is a flick down switch when pressed goes green. In the cupboard there is a small brown box with a switch and three lights above, every time we switch it on, the first green light comes on, then after about 10 seconds there is a very quite 'click' and the red light comes on, i am trying to get hold of previous owner to find out if its ever worked or not, but when we bought the van he said that everything works fine, and everything else does!

any suggestions on what we are doing wrong gratefully recieved!

Oh, and i don't know if it makes a difference but we have a submursible pump externally for water, so don't know if it needs to suck up water first??

thanks all!

hi all

just thought another point to mention is that when we turn on both hot and cold taps water is running through both, but obviously not hot through the hot!

dunno if that makes any difference? also i noticed that in the under-seat cupboard there is a box which has a foam type cover on it (i'm assuming this is hot water as has a cascade sticker on it) and next to that on the floor is a small black knob which says 'on or off' depending which direction you turn it, i have no idea what that is but turned it to 'on' just encase, didn't make a difference?!!

aaaaaaaghhhhhhhhhh

The switch with three lights, although it is on your electric panel, controls the gas side of your water heater.

Turn on and if it is all working ok it will go through it's lighting cycle. If that fails you get the red light. (The click you hear is the gas solenoid closing after is has not lit within the preset time). If it detects a fault you get the yellow light. When it works you just get the green light, and it will stay on.

You can try turning it off, and then on again, to go through a couple of lighting cycles until it gets the gas through.

There is normally an electric side as well, which will have a simple on/off switch. there may be a red button on the unit itself which is a thermal cut out. you can press this to reset it.

It takes a little while for it to heat up the water, and you need to make sure it is full before you switch it on. (ie have water from both taps).

Read the manuals, and then you will have a better idea if it is you or the heater!

The red light is coming on because the gas has not lit. If the gas bottle has been disconnected, it can sometimes take a few tries to light it, just turn the switch off and back on. If it doesn't light after 2 or 3 tries then either the gas is not coming through or the ignitor has failed. Our last caravan had a similar, although intermittent issue. It might be fine for a whole trip, the next trip it wouldn't light at all or on another trip it will be fine for a couple of days then the red light would come on.

Having just stripped one of these out, to refit in our trailer, I may be able to give you a bit of help with the water circuit layout.

The water heater only heats water for the hot water circuit, so when you turn on a cold water tap there is no flow through the heater, just the cold water side, but the pump is the same for both systems, it just forces water through whichever pipes and are open.

When the heater has a full load of hot water, the pump pushes it out by forcing cold water into the heater, same as your system at home.

If you are getting water out of both taps then the water jacket should be full. It may be worth running the hot water for a while to clear any air locks, just in case you have picked up some air.

Ours is the same system with the control box and 3 LED's, get the manual as already suggested and have a read through.

If you look on the internet you will find a few instances of faulty igniter modules and how to identify the problems.

Hope this helps,

Peter

It would appear the heaters 'burner module' is trying to light but failing, so either it is not light, or, it is lighting but the electronics don't recognise it's lit so still shuts down.
Try lighting it while someone outside holds a hand over the gap at the top of the plastic flue cover, if it is lighting you will feel a little heat.

Hers some more general info

The Carver Cascade 2 is a 9 litre storage water heater, which when running on gas will heat the water to 65deg c in about 45 minutes. On 240V mains assuming it has this facility, the time can be somewhat longer or shorter depending on the wattage (630w 3amp to 840w 5amp) of the element fitted, you can use both gas and electric together for faster times.
To operate the gas there is a wall switch or a switch within a main control panel, either way both have three lights green, amber and red. When switched on the green lights, (water tank must be full, i.e. water coming from hot taps), if it stays on after about 8 seconds then the gas has lit and all is well. If the green is joined by the red then you may have a problem, but if the gas bottle has just been changed then air in the pipes will have to be bled through by repeating the above 2 or 3 times. Once lit, and it should light without any pops and bangs, (this would indicate it needs a service), the heater looks after itself and gives constant hot water. Any problems will cause it to shut down safely and show the red light. Forget the amber light, it's to show low voltage and won't light unless the voltage is so low the heater and everything else packed up long since, though you may notice it 'flash' as the switch is turned on or off.
The 240v immersion heater if fitted is totally separate, and lies behind a white plastic box on the inboard end of the water tank. It is controlled by a switch, often close by and at floor level, but again sometimes as part of a remote control panel. The switch has a red light to show it's 'on', not that it's working, this will be determined by the water getting hot. If it does not then it may have 'tripped' Two types exist, early circa 1990 are non-re-settable but are repairable. Later models have a Red button on the end of the plastic box which is sometimes behind a little flap. Switch off mains, and press to reset.
Other faults concerning the gas side very often come down to the 'Burner Module'. This handy little unit contains the burner, gas valve and all the electronics which control it and is accessible from behind the cover outside of the van. In the event things go wrong it's a 5 minute job to replace it, with a new or serviced exchange unit. One other safety device is a wax filled 'fusible' plug, this again is behind the outer cover and shows itself as a 13 mm nut set in the fins above the burner. The wax will melt if things get too hot allowing hot water from the tank to spray over the burner and put the flame out. This will render things safe but will require a new module because it's control circuitry is faulty. However given if the fuse 'blows' without the water apparently getting to hot then replacing the plug will be sufficient. The point to note here is that over time the wax in the plug degrades or the threads leak, at the very least allowing water to seep onto the burner causing it to rust and eventually will still require replacement of the whole burner module.
Further problems that come to light in spring is the discovery of frost damage to the water tank, the non-return valve which is part of the cold water inlet and other plastic fittings. Failing to drain the heater when there is a chance of temperatures dropping below freezing can be very expensive to repair and should be avoided by removing the drain bung and allowing the heater to drain completely. Later models have a valve above the drain hole in the top left corner of the flue cowl, these have a 'toggle' showing that when turned a ¼ in any direction will allow air into the tank and assist the draining. Older models still have the valve but the flue cowl needs to be removed and the valve end pulled to open it, in this case opening all taps in the van will do much the same thing. It is most important that the drain bung is then only placed back into the hole and not screwed in, any water left in the system can then drain away.
Frost damage to the tank will be obvious by the leaking water from the damaged seal, the damaged non-return valve quite often will prevent water coming from the hot taps although the cold water flow will be fine. Other fittings are often cracked by the pressure of the frozen water and will leak on refilling the system.

the knob under the seats near the hot water tank is the gas valve twist this to on position and also make sure you have gas in the gas bottle and this is also turned on, give the switch with the 3 lights  a turn on then if red light comes on turn it off again then back on this might happen 3 or 4 times it does the same with ours when we have had the gas off for a while. also before doing the above make sure you have free flowing water from the hot tap if you have this the water tank is full and must be full before you turn on the water heater. good luck

We have a Bailey pageant imperial, it has the henry ge heater which I presume is the same as the carver ge. It works on gas but not on electric. The reset button seems to be stuck in so can't press it to reset it, and ideas

If reset button needed resetting it would have popped out a little and you would have felt it click back as you pressed in short it's not stuck down its meant to be down so working.
First thing to check is 5amp fuse in the control switch
While the fuse is out so safe to test further, you'll need a multimeter set to ohms and with power off and electic element cover removed, check the two thermostats have no resistance between each ones pair of spade connections, and that there is around 60 ohms resistance between the elements pair of round pin connections.
If they all check ok? then there is a relay but that rarely causes issues, so I'd presume there's a mains supply issue to the switch?
