We've just bought our first caravan and thought we had the perfect one until my husband pulled back the lino in the corner under the front seating and discovered a stained floorboard. I'm guessing it's damp. It is stained black in places and is threatening to go through if you push too hard. My husband is heartbroken. The caravan is only 5 years old. It's strange that the wooden panel of the seat that sits above it is stained too. Would this be mildew from the lack of air in that damp corner or could that be where the water has come in. Are we talking major repair here? I have pictures if anyone can help me stop my husband going into major depression!!!

Questions , how much of the floor area in the pictures is soft to a firm hand press .
Is there a caravan steady leg underneath .
What does the area under the caravan look like , rotted ?
Did it look wetter when the lino was first lifted .
Have you checked to see if it's with a damp meter .

It may be that there's been water trapped underneath the lino from a spillage / leak and this has caused the problem .

Hi Wizard,

Very unhappy husband here. I have spent all day inside the caravan and have totally lifted and removed about a square meter of flooring. The areas in the pictures my wife sent were very soft in the top leftcorner about two foot wide and a foot deep from the front. However the rest is either just discolouration and /or soft to the press but not soft enough to push a thumb through so i removed most of it anyway. The area under the caravan is right where the foot is but is solid enough and takes the weight fine. This is definately damp and not a trapped spill as the wooden seats have black stains and milldew underneath them and on top. The lino was sprayed down on that side so has in my opinion been deliberately hidden, but it was not any wetter when first discovered than when i removed it. The sandwiched hardboard and blue foam insulation under the removed damp hardboard look fine on there own. There is slight discolouring on the lower front portion of the wall which ties in with where the dampest part of the floor was. I think that water was geting in from the roof join but it has been silicone sealed to within an inch of its life. Also i think water is getting in from the main window seals so i have added an additional adhesive backed rubber seal around it to increase the squash factor when closed. I have now replaced the hardboard and screwed it down so it can be removed if this reoccurs again. Just need a rainy day now to check water tightness. Can you advise if i should be looking at anything else. Sorry for the essay but i needed to get this off my chest. I hope the person who sold it to us as damp free feels suitably ashamed.

Regards

Andy

Well thats a sad but unfortunately quite a common story!

I hope you have managed to sort out the problem and that it doesnt put you off caravaning all together, however it does serve as a reminder to us all that it is a good idea to go armed with a damp meter whenever we go looking to buy a caravan.

Hi Andy , good to hear you've got it sorted , if you want email the pictures to me and i'll post them on here , as you say keep an eye out for more water getting in, if it's still dry after heavy rain it might be a good idea to bond the replaced sheet to the floor and not just have it screwed in place , as this would increase the floor strength  See_here and imo you'll need a strong floor because the leg is beneath .

What else to look for , soft area's of wall board / ceiling board , may be buy a damp meter and check the rest of the caravan , i would recommend you have the caravan serviced and a damp check . http://www.1carpc.co.uk/wcdr/checking-for-damp.htm
