Hi has anybody had experience of the refillable gas bottles that you permanently fit to the van and fill up with auto gas at filling stations. This would work out massively cheaper than the fip off refills, but I wondered if there was a down side?

------------- there are 10 types of people in this world, those who understand binary and those who don't.
one of the downside for me with the lpg in the car is the pump seems to be in a silly place in the station, some are nice and easy but some are tucked right in the corner, would be very hard to get a caravan into.
These look interesting - refillable bottles which don't have to be permanently plumbed in place. Expensive, but probably worth it if you do a lot of rallying.
I imagine a lot of forecourts will refuse, but their list of places who do allow filling seems to be growing at a decent rate.
We have a Tinley tech refillable in the new trailer, the Disco V8 is on gas as well so it makes sense to have two fill fill points while we are in the garage.
Agree with siting of fill points, the one on the A14 where the A140 goes off to Norwich is one we use, but have to tajke the trailer off in the lorry park adjacent before we can fill the Disco, never mind the trailer!
Remember that you need to be up in the higher capacities to make it cheap enough to compare like with like, but in terms of the standard small Calor bottle there's no comparison.
Ours is built in (or will be when we get the cooker and fridge in place on the other side of the bulkhead)

we got ours from our local service guy and are well worth it , it costs between £10 and £11 to fill from empty
they are at the bottom of his site www.newarkcaravans.co.uk
have you had any problems refilling them yet on a service station forecourt ? ,,
The only problems we have had is that some LPG pumps are in the most inaccessable places.
- and yes, it has already proved to be well worth the expense. We had BP Gas cylinders because we got a trade price on them; great for North Devon as the depot is on our doorstep but a waste of time for Suffolk as my nearest dealer for the 11kg cylinders was within the London exclusion zone and the m'home does not conform to the latest conditions.
We also had Flogas as their cylinders would fit the gas locker but the Calor 13kg cylinders would not which is why I didn't/couldn't use Calor
We've now got the Gaslows so no more worries for the UK or Euroland
no , filled at three shell garages a1 peterbrough, ollerton, a1 at tuxford and a flogas place near skegg, ,cant fault them , buying another at the nfol
Considering Gaslow myself at the moment. My pros/cons at moment include
Pros - cheap per litre comparison to Calor; ability to keep topped up as you go along/pass LPG stations; bigger cylinders so range of use longer
Cons - install / purchase costs v payback period long (for us as not great ralliers / winter caravanners); warranty issues for install although am told not an issue if by an approved installer [I need to check this out]; noseweight impacts of larger cylinders or if opt for two cylinders
I'm still pondering but like the idea and am in process of talking myself into it, however irrational!
who cares , its cheap , 15% off the full amount leaves me 6.12 kg , which is more than 6 kg calor .our bp garage when asked today said its 100% propane , and they showed me a sheet , just like this one
ben , we worked out one safefill bottle would be payed for after 20 refills vs 6kg calor , we are currently on no 16 refill since feb , and love it, so much so we are ordering another cylinder and a gas beer fridge for the wine for the NFOL
