During the renovation of our caravan earlier this year I discovered that the 12v element on the RM212 fridge was short circuit.
We were due to embark on a trip to Cornwall a bit later in the year and I was a bit concerned about food stored in the fridge during the trip.
In the event, on leaving home, we put frozen cool box ice packs in the freezer compartment for the first part of the journey to Weston Super Mare and all was well - still very cold on arrival.
On site at WSM we ran the fridge on 240v and left the ice packs in the 'freezer' compartment.
From WSM we headed for Padstow ( about 140 miles and 3 hrs with a stop for lunch ). The freezer compartment had 2 frozen pork chops in it too on leaving WSM.
When we arrived at Padstow about 3 hrs later the chops were still frozen solid - no signs of thawing at all.
I won't be replacing the 12v element as there is no need, and a new element is about £25 ( that's without fitting if you are unable to do it yourself ).
Being that it remained frozen after 3 hours and 140 miles, we are not likely to exceed that distance without an overnight stop, and then the fridge could be cooled down on the EHU and the ice packs re-frozen.
So if your fridge doesn't work on 12v and you are not travelling great distances don't panic - carry some ice packs in it to maintain the cooling.

Short circuit? Are you 100% sure? Usually if faulty they go open circuit. As they are low voltage they will measure just over 1 Ohm which may appear to be short.

Good point rodders - thanks, I'll need to check again, next time with a more than cursory and quick measurement of the resistance.
I had 'short circuit' already in my mind before the measurement because the element had been disconnected at its connection block before I had the caravan.
Open circuit wouldn't have required a disconnection by the previous owner.
I have a good Fluke digital multimeter and will measure again sometime, when I'm inclined to dismount the fridge from its cabinet.
Thanks - Colin

Good luck Colin, hopefully it will work. When I had a problem with mine on my old caravan, I tested it using a 12V jump starter connected to pins 3 & 6 on the 12S socket, with a multimeter in series on 10A current range. It should read around 8A.
