Just parked the van on a steep hill when I pit the legs down the front right 19mmbolt head could not be moved because the plastic trim around it had been lifted up about 1 inch,a Escher spanner was the only way, when I looked under the front seat, same side there was a 1inch gap between the wall and floor ,I thought this might go back when I started driving but it has not,has the side panel come away from the floor.how can I fix this
It sounds like the floor has delaminated dropping down thus making the winder bolt drop as well making it look like the trim has lifted. Check for damp in that region and if there is then you will need to do a repair. See link for floor delamination.
If the caravan is old it ain't really worth doing too much, whack the floor back in place from the inside using a block of wood & a club hammer, then cover the floor/wall area with Isopon P40 which is glass fibre & resin. It has strength as well as being filler so is ideal for repairs such as this.
You will need to roughen up & clean the area with meths first. Apply one layer & then apply one or two more layers while first is still tacky.
The chassis is manufactured basically in the shape of a letter 'A' with the end point being where the tow hitch is. As the 'A' shape starts from in front of the wheels the point of support reduces as it narrows therefore the floor at the front on either side has less support. That is why it is advised not to jack up the caravan with the steadies as in time it can actually break the seam and eventually push the floor upwards into the caravan.
This may be worth a watch Click_here and also see other video's on the page as they show caravan construction .
Dave if you have a side alloy trim strip that's at the same height as the floor you may find screws underneath the trim that screw the side wall to the caravan floor . Where your caravan wall has come away from the floor you should be able to see the screws if they are there .
Hi Wizard, I found that 'Swift' factory video quite interesting and although I have visited the 'Coachman' factory in Hull a few years back you never see the workers building the caravans due to it being a special open day for the Coachman Owners Club members. Although the visit was quite impressive all the same this link to the video shows just how hard the employees actually work whilst we just relax and take it all for granted. Thanks for the link, I really enjoyed watching it.
Hi Tango55 , glad you found it interesting , i've watched it and the others a few times now , i always seem to spot something i hadn't noticed before .
