Hi

I've just bought a Swift Challenger 490SE (1998), but I didn't check everything worked before I took it away.

Everything seems to work as it should, with the exception of the Carver 3600STC. The gas tap is on (plenty of gas in the bottle), and it is switched on, you can hear it tick tick away, but it just won't light.

I've tried every possible way of holding the knob down etc, it just won't fire.

Any ideas!?

I can see a spark, it just seems as if gas isn't getting to it, very frustrating!!

Just to update this thread, I have fixed the gas problem! The rod which connects the knob to the valve is secured at the very bottom with a pin (the diameter of a cocktail stick). This pin had come adrift and was preventing the rod from being depressed into the valve. Whilst its working now - is a replacement pin available as no doubt this will happen again?!

I've had a thought - LOCTITE

I'll be cleaning everything up as best I can, and will try relocating the pin with some Loctite. I see no reason why this shouldn't do the trick.

I can only say what pin? there is a roll pin at the bottom of the plastic piezo holder but that is meant to be on one side, nothing should be below that?

I'll try and get a photo next time I'm at the van Gary.

Its tricky to describe.

The control knob connects to the gas valve via a long rod which is nearly as long as the heater is tall. Where this rod slots into the gas valve it is secured in place via a securing pin which goes through the shaft. This pin is working its way loose, sitting proud of the shaft meaning the rod cannot be pressed into the valve.

I understand, missed it's the 'auto' version so you don't have a piezo igniter in the rod.

As you say then, you have a long solid rod with a plastic toggle joint on the end, this, it very much sounds, that someone's drilled it and added the pin to stop the rod jumping off.

If so, then solution is to get rid and use ideally a 3.5mm grub screw that will not need to stick out at all
You might not now be able to now, but, I drill the toggle through the 'v', this gives you more 'meat' to work with and the screw locks into the corresponding 'v' in the gas valve rod.

I’m having problems lighting my carver 3600 was working fine then wouldn’t light got underneath got the clicker working but it still won’t light when I push the knob in it clicks lights then when I let go and turn it onto full it just goes out it’s got me thinking it might be the pole not pushing in to let gas out enough if. That makes sense

Hi, the problem you're having is with the termocouple. Once the pilot light is lit, thermocouple allows the gas to keep it lit. Then, once you let go and turn it onto full, it will work. But in your case, termocouple is telling that there's no heat and switches gas off.

Considering the age of your heater, termocouple is screwed in, and it's really difficult to unscrew it due to alluminium corrosion. You may only have one try, I dont recomend it.

In most cases, the outer wire of the termocouple is damaged. You can repair that. Termocouple I'm talking about on ebay

Termocouple is visible from under the caravan. To test if that's the problem just conect one side of the outside of termocouple to the other side, check if the light stays lit.

Hi. We're also in same boat (van). We don't hear any click when trying to ignite carver. I've bled gas etc, and gone through testing protocol, but can't get pilot lit. Any suggestions please?
