Hi All,

After reading lots of posts in this forum I decided to tackle the damp problem in our 2002 Avondale Dart.

It's been leaking through the toilet fresh water filler door in the bathroom which sits in the middle of the caravan. This has now been temporarily sealed with plastic sheeting and insulation tape. We had spongy wallboard to the left of the toilet and also the water seems to have travelled right and soaked the wallboard in the rear dinette.

I have removed the toilet and bathroom fittings and can see the extent to which the damp has gone that way.

On peeling back the wallboard in the rear dinette I was alarmed to see that the wooden baton has rotted in the rear corner for about 6 inches into the corner - ie at the furthest point from the suspected point of entry. I've uploaded some photos on Flickr.

I've got two questions:

1) does this suggest that water is also coming in via some point at the back ?

2) the baton is dry now so do I need to replace the damaged section at all seeing as it's quite small? Can I safely cover it up with the new wallboard or would this leave a structural problem ?

I would be looking for other entry points myself as thats quite a away from the first point, though not impossable if the van was tilted slightly and there was a fair amound of water ingress.

That bit of wood does not look too bad to replace, so i think i would, having said that i have a similer piece at the top where the awning rail screws too, it would be a nightmare to replace, so i coated it with ronseal wood hardener, the awning rail screwed back on ok so im not overly worried, your van is newer than mine though and will be worth somewhat more !

I think what im trying to say is, i would replace it... but if the leak is stopped and the wood treated its not going to fall apart either

I think if I had gone to the trouble of peeling back the wall board which will have to be replaced then I would be on the safe side and replace the wood frame as well.Ian
