The door hinge’s on my Elddis Avante have become very stiff to the point that the bottom door no longer seats on the rubber. Suggestions on what to do and why it has gone stiff please.

Thanks

Paul

Hi Paul and welcome to the forum, I can see that this is your first post. You haven't said if it's a stable type door or not (top & bottom) or one single door but the task will be somewhat identical. Have a look at the door hinges first, if they are like mine they fix into the door by means of screws but are pop rivetted into the caravan side wall. Remove the plasic bungs at the top and bottom of the hinges in order to see the swivel pin then unscrew the door screws and remove the door from the frame leaving just the hinges fitted to the caravan. Spray some WD40 into all of the swivel pins and with a pair of Mole Grips attached, swivel the hinge with the Mole Grip handles to and fro as the hinges will be far too stiff to push & pull by hand. Just keep on spraying a little WD40 and work the hinge back and forth until freed. Do the same with all the hinges individually then when freed add a drop of 3 in 1 oil to lubricate the hinges as this oil is thinner and is ideal for the application. Fit the the door/s (bottom first if they are stable type doors) back on the hinges and pinch up the screws (do not overtighten). Push the door into the recess and see if it's location is correct as it may need to go higher or slightly lower for re-alignment. When in place, open the door and securely tighten all the screws. Check to see if the door closes and locks okay, if it doesn't it will just need re-aligning slightly. Finally, replace all the plastic bungs to the top and bottom of the hinges to stop any dirt entering the swivel pins.

The method explained worked for me anyway and mine was quite bad as you could see the caravan body near ther door being wrenched when pulling the door open, it was that stiff. The job should have been done prior to collecting the caravan from the dealer but as it was winter and another thread of snow at the time I decided to do the job myself in the spring. Thankfully I have had no more problems with it but we have used the caravan a few times this year so the lubrication and regular opening of the door has helped. I think you will find that this problem occurs more often when the caravan has been standing for a while without the use of the door access and eventually it starts seizing up.

I had the same problem on mine. I bought myself a cheapie pop riviter off ebay, sorced the correct sized rivets and removed all the hinges and stripped them down to the bones. I found that the plastic bushes are integral to those cap pieces. I also found that even after some lubrication they were still an 'interferance fit' in the extreme and fairly hard to work. I then decided to run a drill bit through them just to clear them a little, they worked a treat when i refitted them. These are also bloody expensive if you buy new ones so it was worth the fafing about!

I had a stiffy on our caravan. I took the door off and removed the plastic cap from the top of the hinge and worked a thin oil into it wherever possible whilst working it back & forth with a pair of mole grips.

I did get much easier with a lot of work and was a job well done. I didn't find it necessary to remove the hinge from the wall not was it necessary to drill it.

Hi Paul,
I had a very stiff hinge and was advised by an engineer to take the hinge apart to ease. Since doing them I have not had any problems.
