Hi just bought a caravan to live in whilst i relocate until my house is sold.

Just discovered damp walls around the window below seating area. I didnt notice at the time. The previous owner mentioned that he had new window seals fitted. Looks like he also placed a self adhesive vinyl as wallpaper straight over the damp board.

Ok, i have removed said vinyl & opened windows, now the board can dry out as it was sweating under the vinyl since the window rubbers where replace.

I plan to let the boarding dry then was thinking of applying pva to reseal the wood.

Finally i need to get hold of some kind of dry adhesive wallpaper as i dont fancy wetting wallpaper elseI will be back to squeare one. What do you guys out there think?

By the way i will be living in it in the next 3 weeks but only have limted time between now & then to carry out emergency repairs.

Thanks in advance for advice.

pva glue for wallpaper - right under my nose, thanks Geoff.

Also saw some sticky back fablon in wilko's retails at a fiver for 67cm x 2m but think your wallpaper & pva glue sounds an easier option or more workable when laying I think. Just need to suss out the pva ratio to water especially if drying out ply.

Time allowing i would have removed the interior to expose the full extent of water damage & replace the ply, but due to time constraints this isn't an option. Hope the van & me survive the winter!!

Ohh i may be able to help here !

I have almost completed a damp repair on our caravan, i was looking to do it on a budget, now fablon looked expensive, and i couldnt find a good match.
So i was pointed in the direction of a company called Tektura they do a paper backed vinyl called intra 62502 this was a very good match to the origional stuff in my 1996 sterling sprite !

So new boarding has been fixed in (3.6mm WBT plywood) which comes in 8x4 foot sheets from B&Q for £12.00 a sheet, i used two

And i orderd 4x linear meters of the Intra wallpaper (far too much as its 130cm wide)... for a cost of £10.00 with free next day delivery

It looks fantastic now and matches really well, we glued the paper to the boarding with PVA as well !

This it what it looks like,

Im pleased, and it was fairly cheap, hopefully thats of some help !

Edit... oh and likeing your username... Vitesse ! is that an SD1 or an 800

Hopefully once i/we have relocated to Devon then hopefully i will keep the van & do a proper panel replacement reapir job.

Yours looks good. How did you cut the shape for the windows did you manage to use the old board as a template?

Ah, a triumph, Still British so all good

The window edges where measured, although one board we did a template with lineing paper as i saw it through a link on the Wizards damp repair list, i forget the actual one now !

The old boarding could not be saved, everywhere that had been wet (and it was sodden) fell apart when it started to dry out.

Are you sure you know the source of the leak ? as if it wasnt the window seal i would at the least overseal every rail etc to stop any more water entering !

Not silicone, you want or Sikaflex 512

Soadaseal RV61

Im not saying thats where it is comeing in, but it does seem extreamly common, its where mine was comeing in too.

Idealy you want to find the source, and reseal it properly to prevent further damage.

But realiseing this is a quick temp fix/bodge for it just to last a few months, i would at least overseal the source when you find it even if it looks abit mucky !
