Our last two caravans have had external sockets, but our latest one hasn't got one. This means we have to have a window open at night and it can get a little cold.
Fit them in your battery box, I have just done mine yesterday.
Changed the c-line switch for a sat and tv one. I also put an A/B switch in the cupboard to switch between an external aerial from a bollard or the status aerial.
very easy to fit.find a point of entry for the wire just behind the tv and into a bed box.fit 3 mtrs of cable to the socket.drill hole the size of cable through into the bed box.(check for any obstructions first) .feed cable through, mark the fixing holes with black marker.pull away and drill very thin tiny holes to take the screws.use a good sealer and cover the rear of the socket all round the edge.screw socket down,do not over do this as you can make the holes to big.trim ex sealer and the fit a plug on the inside.,job done. if new ask first as the warranty could become void by drilling.
Michael's pretty much summed it up if you intend to fit a proper surface mount socket as per his photo.
One further comment if you do fit one, is these have a 'collar' on the back that fit into the van outer skin (collar is 20mm diameter I think). You can cut the skin with a 20mm flat drill easily, but only just cut the skin and don't go thru the whole wall with the 20mm bit. There's polystyrene insulation in the cavity, and if you just cut the outer wall for the collar, you can protect as much as the insulation as possible by making the remaining hole with a 6mm wood bit (just enough for the cable on it's own).
Alternatively, CandP's idea works well too (have done this on a few friends vans) but is dependant on clearance and mounting area within battery box.
We have the F-Type Satellite connection in our battery box to which I have added a rats tail with the F-Type on one end and BNC on the other. Much easier to use.
I have used one of the sockets illustrated by Michael above. I was a bit uncertain about drilling through the side of my van so I put it in side locker on the nearside of the van and this works OK. I leave the satellite cable attached and coil it up in the locker when not in use. This solution might not be ideal for everyone but it works for me.
there is certainly plenty of variety. i think i'd be better off going through a locker because i wouldn't trust myself with the external shell of the caravan.
would it hurt the external locker door that goes under the bed if i just run the arial wire in it and shut the door?
i wouldn't have to go to these lengths but the built in arial that is with the caravan doesn't seem to work. the fixings are in the wardrobe and i've tried every permutation with the on-off & sockets but nothing seems to work.
