Hi all, we've just bought a 1996 Sterling Sprite Excel 450CD which is a five berth which obviously used to have doors to separate the back end beds (L-shaped sofa which converts to small double with bunk over) from the rest of the van. When we bought it sadly those doors had been removed and replaced with a curtain. We would have preferred the doors in the hope that the kids could get a better nights sleep and we didn't have to creep around so much!

I wondered if anyone had any opinions on bedroom doors - love them? Hate them?

Is it worth me trying to either find some replacements from a breakers, or even to try and make some to fit the bill?

Also, does anyone HAVE a sterling sprite excel - I think both the 450 and 500's had the doors - I'd love to know how the doors worked! I can't figure out if they were bi-fold or sliding and where they tucked away when not in use! Any advice would be much appreciated! Thank you!

most likefully they will have been sliding doors and the wife hate'd them they jamm'd shut  a couple of times and i once had to force open a rear window to get the kids out after that we replace'd the door with a curtain for peace of mind in case we ever had a fire in the caravan.

That's a good point Bill ref jamming - maybe that's why original owners removed 'em.

In all honesty, I can't think that doors would offer that much more protection from sounds disturbing the kids than the curtain. If you did re-fit, you'd want to find something very lightweight (van doors generally reinforced and hollow for weight advantage).
I've a bi-fold door in my Bailey and it's only still there because it provides a bit of privacy for dressing at the back of the van, otherwise I'd whip the thing off and store with the few other odd bit's I've taken out.

Hi Bill and G7ACU (can I call you G7 for short?!), thanks for your replies. A good point re jamming, I had thought that they may be bi-fold which hopefully wouldn't jam?

You may be right about it not making a lot of difference re noise, it was one of my queries - is it really worth bothering lol! However, my kids managed to rip the curtain off within an hour of being in the new caravan at the weekend so it was time to decide either to replace the curtain rail with a sturdier one or replace the doors lol!

I agree with the use of the end of the van as a changing area G7 - we're hoping for longer stops to put the kids out either in annexe's to the awning or (the eldest - 15 - at least) in a pop up tent, and they would appreciate having somewhere private and 'stood up' to change! Though I suppose a curtain would still do that job too!

Has anyone decided to do away with doors and replace with curtains - did it work? Did you regret it? Or anyone else still have the doors and find they're a godsend? Thanks again!

Ooooh Din85, that's brilliant! I can't tell from your photos how the doors work - are they sliding? Bi-fold? If you wouldn't mind giving me some dimensions that would be brilliant - and a bit cheeky to ask but photos of how they open with a kind of explanation as to how they're hung? I'm going to keep phoning around breakers to see if I can pick some up, that would definitely be the easiest option I think!

Ok just uploading some pics...

I have taken the tape measure out and i found that...

Both parts of the door are identical sizes, so the wood appears to be 15mm thick, and both parts are 650mm wide and 1882mm tall !

Im hopeing the pics can do the talking on how they work as im rubbish at describeing things.

Breif description is that both doors are hung from the top rail by 4x white plastic sliders, all 4 sliders use a single channel in the rail.. but one door is screwed in one side and one the other (if that makes sence).

There is also a stop in the middle for one door, the door that sits closesed to the bathroom wall has another rail on the floor just to keep it in roughly the right area and both doors have one plastic slidy rail thingy to hold them together at the bottom

Anyway... have some rather rubbish pics (not the best light in there in the dark

In no particuler order im afraid...

Hope that helps

Oh wow, that is absolutely superb! Thank you sooo much! I don't know what to say! You've gone to so much trouble! Awesome! With these pictures and measurements I should be able to re-create the doors! Awesome!

Interestingly, my van still has the channel on the ceiling, and the plastic one on the floor - which the little table was sitting in - so where does it live in your van??!!

Thank you again, I really owe you one! If ever I can do anything in return please let me know! This place is great!
