I found these in the pan cuboard under my cooker in the van which is a 2004 Lunar CS with a Spinflow 'Caprice' cooker. They were dusty and never used from what i could see and were still covered in the protective celophane. I stripped this off and gave them a clean. No idea what they are though.
Yep, they are the heat/splash guards from the side of the hob. The do stop a lot of splashes when I'm cooking as I am a messy b*gger. Can't imagine why anyone would want to remove them though.

We have a pair the same, and likewise we have never used them, they just seem a bit bulky and in the way when fitted, so ours stay firmly in the bottom pan locker.
I can see that they may give protection to the gas blowing out on a low flame from the draught of the entrance door side, but being as we dont tend to fry stuff in fat on our hob, and never use the grill, we have no real use for them.

Another Lunar owner! I guess this comfirms their use 100%.
A nice idea if maybe you wanted to cook with the door open and a breeze blowing in, but as you say, they are abit bulky.
