Ie just bought a new car so I hae to change the no. plate on my caravan.
Does anyone know how dealers fix the plates because I dont know how to get the old one off. Is it stuck on with some strong glue so if I try and remove it will I damage the caravan.
Would it be better to stick the new one over the old one? If so how?
Should it try drilling holes in the caravan and bolt the number plate to it?
I wouldn't try drilling any holes - I'd try removing the existing plate using a thin (single strand) of wire pulled to and fro behind the plate, taking care not to damage the surrounding finish. You should be able to attach the new one with heavy-duty double sided tape.
do not drill holes as they can spread unseen and invalidate your warranty if new.buy from a car parts place trim double sided tape, three strips of this along the plate and it will not come off.make sure you line it up good before fixing as it will not move once stuck.a roll cost me £5.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
Any car accessory shop will sell double sided sticky pads to stick the new plate on. 4 will do it.
If there are no visible fixings the old one will be stuck on with similar pads and should carefully pull off but no reason why you can't stick the new over the old.
If you haven't got your new plate yet you will have to take your V5 to the shop to get a new one and they will sell the pads.
Use something with a wide blade..wallpaper stripper..and easy up the plate, then get a hair dryer on hot and heat between the plate and the body of the van.The heat will loosen the glue on the plate and just peel of.Thats if its stuck on with reg plate strips.
i bought some double sided tape about 6 years ago when we got our first caravan.
4 caravans later and i've still got some left.
i tend to put more than 3 strips on though.
2 across top and 2 across bottom + 1 either end.
good stuff.
Just bought 4 double sided strips from an Auto Shop (Wilco, if you have them in your area, if not any Auto Shop will have them for number plates) for mine, cost, £1 for the 4, done the job just fine.
Took old ones off with wide blade scraper.
