I have had damp detected in my 1992 abbey surrey, quite a bad reading from one of my skylights and in my bathroom. Can someone advise what is the best sealant to use to re-seal all these, or any other advice they can offer.
If you mean the damp is in the framework, to do a proper job you will need to remove complete skylight & replace any rotten timber but for a quick bodge that should work use Silkaflex 512 around outside of skylight frame pushed underneath rubber. Needs to be as dry as poss. & sealant should be applied in temps above 10deg so maybe just gaffer tape it now & fix it in the spring.
thank you for that, I will take on board what you suggest. Also what would you suggest about my bathroom area, some of the sealant has come off around the toilet area and I was going to take of the remaining and reseal. Would the silkaflex do the job inside the caravan and would I be able to do it now or would I have to wait to do that?
One of the guys Tentz who is a caravan engineer said not to use silkaflex round a skylight as its also a glue.He suggested in useing IDL99 in case the skylight had to be removed through damage etc.
Kazburty,if you go to a caravan dealer shop, they will tell you and sell you, the best stuff for your bathroom area,
The reason he said don't use Sikaflex is because it is permanent & cannot be removed except with a knife. As the Caravan is 19yrs old the op may want to do a simple repair that seals it rather than a 'proper' repair.
It depends what the op wants to do. If the sky light is in otherwise good repair he may prefer to do a repair that will take minutes rather than days. If you did seal the outside with Sikaflex it would be easy enough to cut away if required. You could use the same cartridge of Sikaflex to seal bathroom but do that when fixing rooflight as shelf life of Sikaflex ain't that long once opened.
