Looks like i might have the normal element problem with my fridge, works well on gas and 12v but as soon as i switch to 240v bang goes the RCD in the van and sometimes takes out the sites switch (upsets the neighbour).
Managed to get the element out, there is no visual damage or loose connections, checked resistance and got 457 Ohms for a 95w 220v, should be 510 Ohms.
So before i try and get a new one (very rare now) should i have checked anything else.
It will be leaking current to earth. Try resistance from both live and neutral to the metal casing (earth), should be infinity (IE. No conductivity at all).
It just may be a fault somewhere else, but more than likely the element.
Hi, Thanks for the quick response, i will take it to work and try it on the megatester, i only have a £10 B&Q multimeter, will report findings Thursday.
Before lashing out, use a blow lamp to heat up the element from the bottom end away from the wires. Not red hot! Just to hot to handle.
The earth fault will be damp and rising heat should drive it out.
Normally i'd suggest using fridge on gas for a couple of days as that generally has the same result.
If all fails, buy a 125w elment which should be cheapest and readily avaiable, best is 62xx series as lead tails are longest so easist to modify connections to suit your model fridge.
Only difference in use is slightly different current draw, fridge will work fine
PS, 95 at 220v and100 at 240v is one in the same amps, both should be rated at 230v now
You are right, i put it on the 1000v megatester at work and it gave bad results so i connected to the office mains via a light switch and the element warmed up, checked the amps and its drawing .48 amps, then once it cold down checked again with megatester and all is well, must be damp, mine does not have a sheeve covering the entire wiring only the connections on the element are covered, so will heat shrink a cover onto the wires.
So in conclusion, if anybody is having the same problem try the steps above before buying a new one and a shout out to all the people who read and helped on this one.
