Hi can anybody help please? Just bought a cracking little monza 400d 1992, but something seems to be missing on the 12v electrics. Everything works when connected to the battery, but the wire seem to just be scoth connected together! Surely there should be a distrubution panels or something?

A wiring diagram would be really helpful and any ideas on how  to smarten up the installation please.

On a low spec caravan of this age there is often no control panel, I've got a Monza of '85 vintage & it has EHU & battery but no charger. If yours has a similar setup the battery will charge off 12s lead while driving but there will be no charger unit to charge while hooked up to EHU. To avoid spending loads, simple way around this is to bring a separate trickle charger to charge battery as required while on EHU.

Here yer go...no battery at all but its easy enough to wire one in as appears to be the case with yours. No6 wire would be wired to fridge if fitted & a battery would be wired into no4 wire(& charged while car is driving) & all earthed with no3, I would guess. I'm no expert tho & stand to be corrected.

Thanks for the input.

The next question is, should there be some fuses on the wiring? and whats the best charger to go for, i ideally want one that will charge the battery and allow me to still use the 12v equipment.

Cheers!!

If theres a battery there should be an inline fuse near the + terminal & on the diagram there are fuses for the interior lights. If you wanted to fit a proper caravan charger/stabilised power unit you would need to do a bit of rewiring & cost for unit is about £150 upwards.

As I said the simple alternative is just to get a cheap mains trickle charger for a few quid & charge battery as needed while on ehu.

You might find a cheap Zig unit on fleabay that would cover all your fuse, charging needs. Dead easy to wire in if your existing is anything like the diagram Tentz uploaded.

If you're quick you might get hold of a Lidl smart charger, they're only £12.99 (they were on sale last Thurs).

I don't like the idea of using one as a caravan supply myself, as they can put out over 14.5v, which can be a bit much for some 12v equipment, but the battery should act as a kind of "filter" in this instance anyway. (it's screw mountable & has ring terminals, so would be quite good in that respect).

As for fuses, it'll mainly be 10amp for most things. Remember, where a fuse is concerned, from a technician's point of view, a fuse is only there to protect the cable of the system. The fridge shouldn't require a fuse in the caravan on the 12v side, this is all taken care of on the car's split charge relay side of things. Go for a 10amp for lights, maybe a 15 for the water pump (pimp might have it written on it somewhere).

I will have a look at my caravan book in a moment & post again, let you know what mine are rated at.....

Right. Mine shows a 5a for the water pump, a 10a for all the lights & it does have one for the fridge (strangely enough) which is a 15a.

I think my instruction manual is slightly wrong, as it's for an older panel. I know my panel has more fuses, for instance I know it has a 5a fuse for the awning light & a 10a fuse for the 12v charging circuit (not such a bad idea, if you're putting in your own charger).

You could be better off looking for an old panel & transformer/charger unit from a caravan breakers, I know they show up on ebay quite often for around £50 - £80.
