All,

Munglie and I have just dropped in to check on our caravan today and found traces (and more than traces) of mould on some of the cushions and on one or two of our camping chairs. Here is a picture of the worst cushion http://www.flickr.com/photos/76870795 at N07/6903731003/

The cushions were stood up in the centre of the 'van and we can't seem to see any signs of water ingress. Everywhere sounded nicely crisp on tapping and there was no discolouration.

Is it likely that this is just caused by condensation? We had dehumidfying packs out in the 'van and these seemed to have trapped a fair bit of moisture.

I'm gutted really and I don't know enough about this (First caravan, first winter) so I'm worried that this signify a damp problem.

We have opened the pan cupboard to expose the vent and also opened the skylight blind so that the caravan can hopefully warm up a bit and ventilate. Any experience or insight on this problem would be massively welcomed.

Many thanks,

J

I get a LOT of condestion evan though the van is well aired. Was it well aired?nothing blocking the air vents?I checked my van about 3 weeks ago and there was bad condestion on the ceiling, everything felt damp. Its usually caused by the air heating inside the van during the day and cooling at night but we have different "damp"days here in Scotland than in England.

I dont think you have to worry about damp unless it only shows in one spot ie a wall or a mark on the ceiling.

i went into our van also today, and there was mould/mildew everywhere ,we have it under a cover... it was on the worktops and on the bathroom sink and the cooker ,a couple of spots on the door and walls easy wiped ,but the worst bit was in the bathroom that i papered last year, obviously i didnt use a washable paper ,so lesson well learned i will have to re paper with a vynil paper as the green marks wont wipe off ,i had washed it all down with an antibactrial wash before i shut it down for the winter so god knows what happened this year !!!!

As stated you need to get as much thru flowing vetilation as possible, if you have permanent outside vents inside cupboards & toilet, doors need to be left open. Dehumidifying devices are counter productive as they store water inside the caravan & make the atmosphere even damper.

That's a valid point Tentz and I wholly agree, that's the reason why I never use any dehumidifying device either and never had a problem with mould at all. In fact I only went down to the caravan storage yesterday (as the weather was fine) to check to see if everything was okay. Gladly everything is fine and couldn't visually see any mould.       Dehumidifyers...

In 50+ years of caravanning I have never had mould on anything in the caravan and I have never used any form of dehumidifier . I keep the vents clear and ensure a good airflow through the caravan. On site I tend to keep a couple of windows on the 'night latch' to help remove any excess moisture created. If a dehumidifier makes you feel better then use one as there is no point in being miserable but that is the only benefit that I can see in them.
