Last summer when I was looking for a Freedom there was one on e-bay that had been painted black with gold carriage lamps. Looked like a hearse. It went for a lot less than equivalent "normal" coloured ones, but that may have been because it was black.
I've seen others that have had various vinyl stickers applied, one I remember was covered in pink hearts.
The lining of mine needs re-doing as it's sagging badly, you can't re-use it, the reason it is coming unstuck is that it is foam lined velour and the foam has all degraded. You can buy new liners but they are dear (about £800 off the top of my head) so a more cost effective solution is carpet or the stuff that car manufacturers use.
I've been plucking up the courage to do mine since I got it last August, it's quite a big job as all the units have to come out.
If you do change the lining, be sure to use glue that will stand very high temperatures as the roofs get very hot on a sunny day - that's one of the reasons why the original foam liners degrade.
On a 1976 van I suspect the "brown cord" is not original but is what has been used by a previous owner to replace the velour stuff as this only seems to last 15 - 20 years.
(My van is 1993 but a few years ago I had a 1996 one and the head lining was OK on that one.)

What colour were they?
Some of them were two tone like light green, dark green,Light red, dark red. There was one that really stood out and it was metalic light grey and dark grey. If your thinking along these routes dont put a line in the middle of the van and make it two halfs, make it from corner to corner or three quarter painted in one colour and the rest in the other. The other option which they tell me is cheaper than a respray is Di..Noc.A wrapping that looks like carbon.
I reckon painting up one you want to hang on to would be a good idea, the thieves would think twice if it 'stood out from the crowd' as it would be harder to sell on.
the brighter retina stinging colours would be an even better deterrant.
I absolutley LOVE my coloured van!! I've had several offers for her (way more than I paid for it) and one man offered me over £5000 for my Mini and van combo but Holi and Wilma Daisy aren't for sale.
