Hi,
I would like to install an oven in my 1990 Sprite Alpine. The space for the oven is there in the form of a large cupboard underneath the two ring burner and grille. I have bought a second hand oven from a guy who was breaking a couple of vans, it's an Optimus 6020 and it looks very similar to the Rose oven I had in my Bailey, It even has Edward Rose on the back of it.
The reason I want an oven is I used the oven alot in my first van and I think I will miss it if I don't fit one.
Anyway, My question is, Do I need a vent at the rear of the oven to the outside ? I remember my Bailey had one in the back panel as the kitchen area was at the back but in my Sprite it's down the side. I have seen some vans fitted with an oven and no vent to the outside.
I really would like to avoid cutting a hole but If I do need one I guess I'll have to get the cutting tools out. Could I get away with lining the inside of the cupboard with some sheet steel ?
The Oven I've got looks like it might have been a free standing one looking at the brackets on it and it has an outer casing which is painted/coated. I've lifted the top off and it's insulated between the outer casing and the inner wall of the oven.
Any advice much appreciated.
Matt.

Hi Matt, your proposed oven may need a vent, but as suggested seek expert advice on this, regarding the steel sheet, I found that if you go to a plumbers merchants the have a fibre heat resistant board (looks similar to the old asbestos board) it is light and not that pricey, sorry cant remember what the board is called, the heat from oven will not transfer to any of the caravans wooden interior.
------------- If everything runs smoothly then I must have done something wrong
If in Doubt Check it Out.

My first M/home had a Rose oven, with No outside vent, and I have fitted a new Smev oven in a new M/Home,and no vent is needed for it,as it is totaly sealed all round.and the heat comes out the front top grill just like my Rose oven did.
this is our old van with the Rose oven in,you can see the fridge vents, the oven was right at side of the Hab door, and as you can see there are No vents.

------------- Think this year is to follow old meet friends for 2014.
If you cant do someone a good turn, don`t do them a bad one,its nice to be nice you know, and little things mean much more later in life.

I never got on with the halogen oven, much prefer my gas one.
You should be able to tell from looking at it, weather or not it needs a vent, but my advice would be to put one in, as most caravan ovens have one (motorhomes don't though, for some reason).
Usually the vent is just behind the grill. I think it's more meant for those unlikely times when you'll have both on together.
They're not that difficult to fit, but they shouldn't really be fitted with flexible rubber gas hose, they should ideally be fitted with rigid copper gas pipe (as hose needs changing, & hose is usually for free standing, portable appliances).
Personally I would get on & fit it myself, but I'm pretty competent & confident with these things. I would also give it it's own isolation valve, placed somewhere where you can get to it (like in the cupboard under the sink, or wherever your other valves are, best keep them all together). I think this is a necessary requirement with gas appliances in caravans.
------------- Matt.
