We have an 85 ah battery that has difficulty moving the 'van on the mover. It is about 5 years old. Someone has said we need a 110 ah battery, do you think this is right?

Firstly both batteries are powered by 12 volts so a 110ah battery is no more powerful than an 85ah battery. The difference is that the bigger battery stores more energy so the power actually lasts longer. Basically it's like having two aquariums, one that holds 2 gallons and one that holds 3. If you pour the water down the same size pipe, although the flow would be identical it would take longer to empty the bigger one. Going back the battery, I would buy an electrical tester and check the voltage of your existing battery first as fully charged it should be no less than 12.7 volts. If it is 12.6 volts it's half charged and 12.5 volts the battery is fully discharged. After checking, if it is found that the battery is not holding a charge then it may pay you to buy a 110ah battery but you would have to check the battery box first as some have a smaller access and are too small to accommodate anything bigger than an 85ah battery.

If you are concerned about the actual size of the battery there are quite a few 100amp hour batteries on the market which are almost the same size as the 85amp hour.

Thanks guys for the replies. It just occurred to me that the 85 ah battery hasn't been charged on the mains for a very long time, and could be quite down

When we has a mover put on our last van, I rang Powertouch for advice & the man there told me to save my money & stick with the 85ah battery which was on the van. I did & we had no problem at all.

When we bought this new van we had a mover fitted by the dealer before delivery, when we collected the van I questioned why they'd fitted a 110ah battery & they said it was the only one they fitted when a van had a mover. Probably should have said because it was dearer than the 85ah they had on the shelf. The 110ah is a right pain because it only just fits in the battery box. Our van is a Pageant Provene series7.

I think the replies above answer the question very well but if you have doubts, why not call the mover people and ask them.

Our 85amp didn't really do the business when we fitted a mover. Depends how much you plan to use the mover I guess For the sake of another £75 odd you will be covered for pretty much any situation.

Good grief! £75 on top of the price of a 85ah, whoever your buying your batteries from is fleecing you.

I don't have a fitted mover but one that replaces the jockey wheel when I want to use it and runs from the caravan battery. It's an 85 aph and handles it fine.

I suspect that at 5 years old the battery you have is on it's way out.

The explanation by tango55 is a slight over simplification of the facts. One of the main reasons for a battery failing to adequately power a motor mover is that it's voltage will fall when required to deliver a large amount of current to the motors. The ability of a battery to maintain it's voltage when under load is yet another parameter of of a battery. It is true, however that larger capacity batteries also generally have better performance under load than their smaller (lower capacity ) counterparts although small capacity batteries can be selected to offer good load performance (but you need to shop around). As batteries age, their capacity and load performance degrade, also a battery in a poor state of charge will exhibit very poor load performance, so it's critical to keep the battery well charged.

Richard

That has a lot to do with questionable quoting of the Ah capacity of the battery, or worse still not quoting how its rating is derived.
You should check the battery you buy complies with EN50342; see the CC's article of October 2010 for details. Our batteries need to meet C20[or to K20 in some languages] where the testing of Ah is for a 20 hour period; if the maker/supplier chooses to use a shorter period they can achieve a far better figure for the same bulk of lead and hence a route to selling a smaller battery. The EU was aware of the practice and introduced the quoted EN to protect buyers. If it is relatively small physically compared to its competitors for its claimed rating beware of why and check for that standard.

We had to change our battery to a 110 from an 85 when we had a mover fitted to our van as the battery did not power the mover long enough for us to manoevre the van into place. Its right what people have said though batteries and lockers come in different sizes and we had to shop around to find one that fitted. Since replacing the battery though the mover works fine and we wouldnt be without it.

have used an 85 for 5 years with no problem what so ever.   the caravan dealer suggested I try it and see   so I did and have never looked back  van is 1350kg max    the difference how long the battery lasts    an 85 can draw 1 amp for 85hours or 85 amps for 1 hour or any combination of the two    a 100 can draw 1 amp for 100 hours......   it has nothing to do with the power of the drive only how long it will last, but that would seem to be using it for a long time without recharging it      however if you are using for a long time I can see your problem but having run a van uphill / over rough ground / along tarmac for a distance/ after a long lay off,  I have yet to find a problem    my simple advice is try it and see   if you find there is a problem, change things, if not, save your money      lots of folk just tell you something without having had any experience and knowledge
