Hello, I have a Abbey Vogue GTS 516 which has a spring cylinder fitted to the handbrake. When changing my hitch recently I noticed that I could push the hitch shaft in and out by hand. Suspect the overun device isnt working correctly. Ive heard people mention the spring cylinder but this only effects the handbrake. I suspect that the brakes need adjusting. Any advice would be welcomed......

Cheers   Steve

There is a damper inside the hitch tube, if this fails then you will be able to push hitch easily in & out. But has this only happened since you changed your hitch, Did you know that the rear of the 2 horizontal bolts that holds hitch also holds front of hitch damper? You have to ensure that rear bolt has passed through hole in damper arm inside tube. If you replaced rear bolt without it passing through end of damper then it will be inoperative.

Thanks for the quick reply, used the pin provided with the hitch when fitting so the damper must have failed. Can't see how you get access to it though. I've removed the overrun mechanism and the handbrake but still can't see it. Do you have to remove the cover that's bolted to the chassis.

Cheers. Steve

If you look underneath behind hitch you should see where rear of damper is bolted on. If you cannot get a spanner in then you will have to remove cover.

Just an update so no one has the same mix up. The problem I noticed was that I could move the hitch by hand. Id had some misleading advice about replacing the spring damper. The spring damper fitted to my caravan was for the handbrake mechanism. There is a hitch damper fitted inside the hitch shaft which is bolted on to the frame at one end and to the inner bolt on the hitch itself. This was easy to remove. Just waiting for the part to arrive now so we can get out and about. Thanks to tents for pointing me in the right direction. Fingers crossed it goes back easy.....
