Hi all,
I recently bought a Swift caravan from the early 90s that has a Carver SLP 3000 gas fire in it.
My problem(s):
1) Slightly 'not-blue' flame seen through mica viewing window (not sure if it's yellow or orange!)
2) Sticky gas valve so the control knob does not come back up by itself (have to give it a little pull)
3) Once it's been on for a while and the burner has gone to low, I find there is sometimes a bit of a 'roaring' noise as the burner comes back on. Disappears after ~10 seconds.
4) Once it's been on for a while, there is sometimes the odd 'pop', I can't tell if this is when it is on low/high
I know, ideally it needs a decent service (probably by ARC Systems ), but my problem is that the caravan is essentially now static (I don't have a tow ball or the right driver's licence to move it!). Additionally, it's quite far away from me (I'm in Glasgow and it's located near Barrow) and ARC Systems.
Questions:
a) Am I right in saying this is 'nearly' the same as a Truma 3002 fire and therefore the burner and gas valve from a Truma will fit?
b) Is it a good idea to remove the mica window (I have a replacement with new seals) and try to clean out any debris on the burner? I'm also going to check the flue and air inlet for blockages.
c) Is there any way to free up/ clean the gas valve (obviously not going to use WD40!)?
d) I notice the gas control rod is a little bent at the end near the valve, how do you get the control rod out?
e) I know how the flue is connected to the fire (and have a replacement o-ring), and the gas is connected under the floor. But, if I disconnect the gas, is it easy to refit and is there anything I should look out for?
I know this is a lot, especially for my first post, but I've been reading a lot around this fire and want to try to make it safer and ideally more efficient and useful.

ps - I'm an engineer with experience of fitting and fixing other electrical/plumbing/gas issues in both houses, caravans and vans (always checked by qualified gas fitter prior to use!). I'd classify myself as having the ability to take the fire apart, but perhaps not the specific gas fire knowledge required to properly identify a fault and not damage more of the fire whilst trying to fix it!
