Well that does change things, but that depends on the load index number of the tyres you bought?
There are actually four car type tyres of this size so four load index numbers, 78 and 79 which are no good, then two reinforced tyres at 82 and 83, 82, has a max load of 950kg at 39psi and 83 is 974kg at 41psi

Jumping in on this thread - what a minefield....

Our maximum laden weight is 1150kg, our tyres are new and are 165/13 C 8Ply 94/92N stating:
single 1477lbs (670kg)65psi
dual 1389lbs (630kg)65psi

Now 65 psi seems rather high, but then I have to remember that's for a loaded caravan of 1260kg.

So for our caravan working out by formula would be
single 59psi
dual 56psi

now that is for fully laden so do I deduct 6-8 psi from the dual to give correct tyre pressure??

Strangely the handbook states 175SRx13 (but was told by swift the 165x13 was fine) reinforced radial with tyre pressure of 42.

oh...I believe they are currently set at 55psi

The "Dual" figure applies to vehicles with two tyres on the same side, same axle. The single figure is the one you want.

As I see it the formula is 65/670 x 575 = 55.78 for your setup. You can then knock off 10% as its a caravan giving 50.2. 50psi would be right for your MAW of 1150.

55psi would be safe - your van would just have a harder ride.

Thanks so much Al+Mel, much appreciated - and for explaining the "dual".

The correct pressure for the above tyres and 1150kg is 54psi, what I don't understand is knocking 10% off?

Only if the vans loaded lighter than 1150kg should you consider dropping the pressure.
For instance, 51psi is suitable for 1100kg and 48psi for 1050kg.

My 1990 Swift Corvette which has a delivery weight of 750kgs and a max weight of 950kgs uses car tyres, namely 165SR x 13 at 33 p.s.i. , and that is straight from the manual.

Which goes to Show Stuart how Manufactures, until very recently, skimped on selection of tyres, Swift would not fit those today
Your tyres are at their maximum pressure and load, today a further 10% margin is given and 175R13 tyres would be fitted, a pair of these comfortably carrying 950k at 30psi

Its right by the formula. Gary is going to say the formula gives too high a pressure - so - 56psi ?

Gary - Arc Systems Carver Guru. Knows a lot about caravan related stuff and is THE man for Carver repairs.

See post 5 here;

Tyre Pressures

Caravan manuals do seem to give a slightly lower figure than the formula creates. Our twin axle 'van comes out at 40 psi by the formula but we have 36 psi written on the wheel arches.

No, chart says 57psi for 1315kg, I'd use 58psi for 1340kg

As can be seen then, The formula is pretty close at near maximum load/pressure, it only gets progressively inaccurate, the further away you get from the maximum load, therefore required pressure. BUT always gives a higher than required pressure
