Please could I get some advise from you members on ukcampsite.
The family and I have been camping now for the past 3 years in tents and this week made the plunge into Touring by buying a Throphy 435/5 GT caravan which on first inspection was great nice and clean and smelt fine. Only to find out days later the fine smell was down to freshly painted inside that masked the damp on the back side. I have read some of the threads on this site and looked at the fix it club on repairs. I think of myself as a good DIY person and are willing to give it a go but as never attempting this before I would really appreciate advise to get it right as I am doing this. The caravan is an older model and I was prepared this may happen so I have stripped the seating out and the shelving and taken the plywood wall from around the long window situated on the side near the back end. There is now water getting in (A LEAK NOT DAMP) and the whole piece I have stripped including the polystr is wet and all the wood frame is soaked. This is what I have uncovered so far and it looks like it has travelled further along the side into the wardrobe which I am going to strip also I am just worried if I have to strip the ceiling as the ceiling strips show signs of rust underneath them where the tack's have been. Also is it possible to replace the wood framing. Until I strip all the panel out I am not 100% sure where the leak is coming from but early indications point to the rail on the outer roof (awning type rail). Any help would be greatly appreciated Andy

First thing you need to do is reseal the awning rail or anywhere else you suspect until you see no more water coming in. Then let the van dry out totally....

As for replacing the timbers, it can be done but I would only do that if they are completely rotten and crumbling, otherwise you should dry out the van and give them a good soaking with wood hardner. ( if the timbers are not rotten they can be difficult to remove from the ally skin)

Be careful not to strip too much of the wallboarding/framework out all in one go as this will make the structure of the van unstable.....

Good luck, hope  you get some dry weather to do the job.......

Thanks for the advise, I have stripped the awning rail on the top of the van from the middle to the bend at the end of the van. Whilst doing this I noticed an Inch tear in the roof which was only half covered which I am hoping this was the cause! I have cleaned all the mastic off and wiped down as advised on the fix it forums but after taking the rail off found the last owner had just bodged the rail on the bend and is unusable! Are the rails universal or can I buy an easy replacement? Also had the heat blower in the van all day and is starting to dry the wood framework and looks like I might of been lucky but fingers crossed and time will tell. Started raining and I have just taped over where the rails have been removed and just hope it holds. also What mastic would you advise when sealing? many thanks

Sorry cant help you with the awning rail, I think they are generic to each mak/model of van. Best bet would be breakers unless someone else knows better.

For sealing the awning rail back on I would use the mastic on a roll, for anything else that is going to be sealed and never removed again I would and have used sikaflex 221 or 512

Just dont forget to wipe the area over with meths before applying sealant,

Have done that on my van, used 19mm mastic and sikaflex 221, gives a better  whiter finish. I must add tho that my van is a 1999 and I have no intention of it ever being done again. Sikaflex sticks like the proverbial and is almost impossible to remove once set, so if you are going to use it just make sure you are happy that its permanent........Keith...

Im having to replace the rear side rail on my 1982 Lunar!! Ive ordered Aluminium extrusion from Magmun or try O'learys as they do it too - both companies are more than helpful! On the O'learys website they give a face on view so you can match it best to the rail you have taken off!
Good Luck
