Hi people, I am new to the world of caravans, and on a shoestring budget... so I could use a little advice please.
I have just been to look at a 1989 Elddis Wisp 4/5 berth caravan. from what I can see the van is clean and dry on the inside, there was a problem with water ingress on the front corner, last year, but this has been sealed.. and even after the last couple of weeks of monsoon is dry. Everything inside van is in good nick, the wheels, tyres, legs etc all good.. but the plywood on the underside of the van is shredded ( delaminated??) and hanging down all over the place.. the owner has had to take the van through a ford to get to its storage place and I think this caused the problem!!
Is the plywood underside just a cover, that I can replace.. or is it a really important structural part?
I need your wisdom to know whether to buy... or run away!!
Hi and welcome to the forum. Delamination is not actually the floor boards themselves, it's when the substance of compressed foam between the top and bottom boards has collapsed making the floor feel spongy or springy when you walk on the inside of the caravan which can be repaired. However, what you have visually seen sounds to me more like timber dry rot underneath that after going through the deep water has revealed what the true damage is. I'm not an expert on this but I think it would be quite a difficult task to repair as the bottom boards are resting and bolted on the chassis itself. I think realistically you need some expert advice before you consider making a purchase.
Run for the hills, the underside ply forms part of the sandwich construction of the floor,so really an integral part of the vans structure. Not something to be taken on on a shoestring budget...
