Hi All.

We have a 86 Avondale Perl 4 berth, old I know but our first van as a starter to get us into the swing of things.

We have both 12v battery and 240v mains electric in our van, with a 5amp fused trip in the rcd/ consumer unit running all front and kitchen sockets. The mains sockets at back of van never trip out as off the 10amp fused trip but ones at front of van including what we plug kitchen electricals into often trip out.

I know it's because we're using domestic higher rated items, however we've bought a 2 ring electric hot plate thingy and as soon as its turned on it instantly trips the 5amp one.

Basically is it possible to replace the 5amp fused trip with a 10amp one instead, as we don't like using the gas system and hence need this 2 ringed hot plate to work... This is also with all other kitchen equip like kettle, toaster and microwave unplugged to try using the hot plate.

Any help, advice or guidance in the above matter would be very much appreciated.

5A only gives you a maximum of 1150W. So, if the rings are more than that, they will cause the circuit to trip, as will the kettle etc.
You can either replace the 5A for a 10A trip, or, if you are competent, rewire the circuits to all work off the 10A trip - obviously you won't then be able to plug powerful items into the rear and kitchen circuits at the same time. You'll need to check the wattage of your appliances and work it out accordingly.

do you have any 240V lighting, the 5A is usually used for fridge, water heater and lighting, sockets off the 10A breaker.
is the 240 original? in particular the sockets, I wonder if the front sockets have been retrofitted to the fridge circuit.
If this is the case, be careful, the fridge wiring may not be able to take 10A, the fridge in my van is wired in 0.75mm flex, which is only good for 6A max.
Having had old vans I know what kind of bodges can be done, this may not be the case, but I would hate for you to take up advice on here and swap the circuits over and end up with a caravan fire.

Hi and thanks for the replies.

All ceiling strip lights in the cvan and its bathroom run off the 12v battery circuit.

Sure we have fridge, as it can be switched to be powered from 12v battery or the hookup mains. However we don't have a water heater as cold water only in this one.

Just going out to take a look specifically at the fridge and twin socket that's close to it and see where it traces back to... If consumer unit that would be good news right? If not that way, I'd get round it by getting the fridge wired up professionally to the consumer unit maybe? Kitchen and front of van re wire maybe poss but need to see how accessible it is to take old wiring out and replace with newer and thicker cabling.

Don't worry in know not to just take anybody's advice as gospel and look for a consensus amongst several people etc.

ours is a bailey 500/5 if we have too much switched on it will trip out.the trick is to turn off any water heaters or fires if you need the kettle or any extra high power units.

Yep, we've sorted the tripping issue with and when using certain high powered items we unplug other stuff... However, when I plugged in the double electric hot plate with nothing else plugged in, it tripped instantly and hence as mentioned in my above posts and replies trying to find out what us best course of action to resolve the issue with leccy hot plate tripping when only that plugged in etc.

not to worry you but i would get it checked out as we once bought a hairdryer new from a local shop and each time we tried to use it in the van the outside post tripped out.

A lot of 2 ring hotplates have a max rating of 2500W ,app 11amps, with both plates switched on, if it trips without the plates switched on it may be faulty but if you are trying to use both plates at the same time it will trip on overload.

Hi,

Yes I see what you mean, although it doesn't trip when hotplate thing off... It's only when I turned them on that it would trip regardless of having nothing else plugged in at the time.
