Hello, could I have a definitive list of the sealants recommended for the following areas on a 21 year old caravan that is unlikely to be resealed again please. Starting to get quite confused!

awning rail:

32mm W4 mastic strip plus a little Sikalflex 512? or just Sikaflex?

The other rails (that have a rubber edge to them)

?? not sure about this one - will Mastic strip make them stick out too much? what do I seal the black rubber with?

fridge vents:

Non setting sealants - IDL99?

Plastic bumper rail covering rusty screws (screwing aluminium to base of caravan):

?

Rear lights and Marker Lights:

IDL99?

Outer door frame - very narrow:

512?

Thank you

Julia

The bits that will never be taken off again - just Sikaflex, after a REALLY good clean up and thorough degrease with Meths (all contact surfaces).

You are on the right lines with the rest. Fridge vents may have to come off, lights will have to be maintained etc. so non setting stuff is ok there.

Its a good idea to clean up as you go with Sikaflex - mask up if poss and clean excess of with white spirit - its a nightmare to shift once cured!

We use Sikaflex 221 a lot.

It is fairly permanent, but for a decent seal you need it to be.

one swift engineer said he used soudalfix for repairs but i do not know which one you would need to ask them.

Thank you.

Used some IDL today when putting a  reflective triangle back on the caravan.

Oh god whan a mess. we are going to 512 the other one! Far less gunky.

Found to unsealed holes under the unsealed number plate. Must have been letting in water through there. So easy to find and so easy to fix. How annoying that something so simple can cause so much damp.

Thats nornally the case, the simplest of places let the water in. By the way , I always use sikaflex 221 on most reseals.......

What's the difference between 221 and 512?

I use the 512, I hate it, I call it stickyflex as it is really really messy stuff if you get it wrong, and watch out for your clothes as well!

http://www.uksealants.co.uk/downloads/Sikaflex-221-TDS.pdf

221 looks to stay softer long, 512 is more 'tacky', mechanical properties are pretty close. 512 has shorter shelf life.

Never used 512, always used 221 or Parabond 600 which is what truck body builders use.

All of the main floor in our big trailer is held in place with Sikaflex 221, no mechanical fixings at all.

am happy with 512 as found it quite easy to use.

we have just resealed the rear lights with W4 Mastic strip cut and placed on the caravan and then pushed the light fitting on to it. Seemed a non fiddly way to do it, then used some IDL just to give it an extra seal on the outside.

Not sure about the fridge vents though. Find the IDL very gunky and  quite hard to use and the W4 mastic will be too wide to use here.  Does anyone else recommend another non setting sealant for things that might have to come off again?

Thanks Fleetwood, funny I woke up with that idea in my head this morning. Just a little fiddly to cut. I wonder if they do narrower strips, might have a little investigate.

Is there a runny sealent which you can run into small gaps that will set later? I have a post re. runny sealants in the section, more info there if anyone knows of anything.
