Connected the battery. Switched to 'van' setting on panel and all working fine on battery ... hooked up the mains, turned off 'van' setting on panel and switched one light on and ... it still pulses as before!
However, if you first set the panel to 'van', turn on a light (i.e. on battery power) and then switch the van button off ... hey presto! it doesn't flicker
It's a while since I followed through on this one! We've been to wet and windy South Wales and windy but dry Somerset since.
Got to the bottom of the pulsing light saga only yesterday when preparing the good old Globetrotter for trade in! Dodgy microswitches in the taps were causing the problems. Had to install new tap unit last night ... just before trading in today!!
Ah well, all's well that ends well - now have a 1999 Bailey Pageant (2000 series) in very good nick and a good price from our trusty dealer. Got her to replace entire left side interior panel which had some softness in it and deal with delamination in two spots on the floor. Despite being heavier than the Globetrotter it was a dream to tow for three hours today.

Blimey, I'd never have sussed that in a month of Sundays, that is an odd symptom and interested you eventually solved, albeit van now gone.
Hope the new (to you) Bailey serves you well and top marks for your perseverance on the pulsing light quirk.
