Going away in our old van a week on Saturday. We decided to lighten & freshen the interior so we decided we would paint the woodwork 2 colours, light blue & off white.

To keep the wife happy i bought expensive paint - ronseal for the blue & crown for the 'champagne' kitchen cupbaord paint.

The wife & i read the instructions on the tins - key the surface with 200 grain sandpaper before painting.

Unfortunately the paint doesn't seem to stick at all well. We have had to apply several layers to get any kind of coverage. The tins are 750ml at nearly £20 a tin.

We have bought 3 tins & progress is slow & dissapointing to say the least.Whats more it will take several more tins & a dented wallet to complete. Any tips to speed up the adhesion i.e pva the surface. I appreciate that the units are some kind of laminate but feel robbed paying so much for  small tins of paint with poor adhesion & coverage.

Thanks in advance for any help

I think you will have to use some form of an undercoat that sticks to laminate then paint..

I meant an undercoat paint as pva seems to go like cling film on laminate and can be peeled off.An undercoat will cover the colour your trying to paint over. You will have to get the shine of it too..

Are the paints oil based or water based ? oil paint is far supirior to water based paint I would use either eggshell or satin finish but a good key is vital 240 grade wet/ dry paper with some warm soapy water should do the trick you could apply an undercoat but satin/ eggshell paints are self undercoating also it is worth using a good quality synthetic brush b&qs own brand are very good

You can get a specific undercoat for melamine. That will then give you a key for your top coat. It is always worth putting on two undercoats if you are trying to paint a light colour over dark. Rubbing down between coats will give you a smoother finish or try using a small roller.

I never sand anymore, unless a surface needs smoothing but to get a goood "key" I use ESP. I usually only use it on normal gloss jobs, but mums friend did all her kitchen units with it and I think they were laminate and it looked a good job.Better check on a smalll area & beg a bit off a friend if you can as it is pricey too

you MUST get rid of all grease for it to be effective though so you would need to sand back the paint that isnt sticking, give a good scrub with flash or similar a good rinse, they apply this as per instructions.

Bacon winner got up in the loft and tin we have says it is suitable to provide a key on laminate just in case that helps anyone else. OP must still be painting.
