Hi...We have a Fleetwood Garland 1991 114-2 caravan and ever since arriving at a campsite on Friday evening the offside (passenger) indicator hasn't worked. I have changed the bulb twice and have resorted to touching the yellow wire onto the bulb, but still no joy and would be grateful of any ideas what to try next etc?
Personally I'd go in the methodical route of car to caravan as you've checked the bulb.
Check socket on car and van plug (do you have a meter to check for voltages). If ok at connection, check for any on-board seperate fuses for indicators (some vans have 'em) with final consideration being a poor earth in the fitting itself.
Firstly, the passenger side is the nearside and driver side the offside bit It sounds very much like a poor contact. The bulb contacts are at two points which are the centre stud on the base and the metal circumference so try applying some Brasso or metal polish with a cloth and clean these specific contacts in the light cluster and see if that works. Does the side light and brake light function in the nearside light cluster or is it just the indicator bulb that not illuminating? If none are working then it could be down to a bad earth contact to the chassis. It's definitely not a fuse or the plug socket at fault otherwise you wouldn't have any indicators working at all either side so it has to be something to do with contacts in the light cluster or the bulb.

Not sure how you quantify this statement as the socket has seperate left and right indicator outputs. 12N socket wiring (for example).

My apologies Paul, you are absolutely right but how do the hazard warning lights operate, is that both indicators operating simultaneously?
Hi...Thank you ever so much for your comments and apologies for our off and nearside error. The offside lights/indicator are working fine as are the nearside light and brake lights. I had a look at the white earth lead and that seems fine with a good connection to the metal on the lights strip. For the past 2 holidays the nearside indicator has worked fine, but on departure it hasn't worked and I've had to wiggle the bulb around until it does, but now it's not working at all, even after trying 2 new bulbs.
I'll get a voltage checker to see if there's anything coming from the car to Pin number 1 (Yellow - Left Indicator) and maybe go from there. Do you suggest I try the Brasso etc?
It won't hurt trying the Brasso first at it may just rectify the problem but any sort of typical metal polish will do. Also double check your new bulb too as even though it's a new bulb it could prove to be defective. Also try operating the brake light and side light at the same time when the indicator is operative. If one of the other bulbs recurringly goes dull then bright then dull then bright again etc. it suggests that it may be a short circuit. At the 12 volt car socket and caravan plug try spraying some WD40 on to the contacts as this will thoroughly clean the contacts and remove any condensation that could be lurking. Before setting off I normally spray WD40 into the 12N & 12S sockets anyway as it helps to keep them clean. It's quite easy to assume that the bulb is okay but many years back I bought a new replacement bulb for a car but still wouldn't work. Sods law, I spent hours searching for the fault only to find out by an auto electrician that the new bulb was actually defective so now I never take it for granted when I replace a bulb. Sometimes it's the stupid minor simplest of things that can cause a headache searching for a major problem but I hope that you eventually get it sorted anyway.

Ah, some more detail. Given the apparent issue you've had then, it could well be due to a failure in the indicator specific connection in the cluster (but as Tango rightly says, don't overlook the obvious bulb too).
Tango, no worries, you just had me completely puzzled for a moment and thought the heat had gone to my head. Yep, the indicators will run as hazards fine when hazard flash engaged - same as in your car.
