Am I ok to continue using 6ply tyres as per my current ones on my Bailey Ranger 500/5 2007 model? another caravanner worried me a little the other weekend by saying he uses 8ply and we should all use them.

Help need to know.

I'm not absolutely certain but I think 8 ply are commercial tyres which are the best type of tyre to use on a single axle caravan to transport the extra weight but I only ever use well branded commercial tyres on my caravan. It may be advisable to speak to your local tyre fitter for advice as they should be able to recommend the correct type of tyre required.

loading is more important than ply, think your van weighs the same as ours.you do not want to go below 95N.see chart.

If all else fails you can ask the manufacturer. Not sure what my ply is but they were fitted by a dealer so assume these are the correct type.

We have always used 8ply on our trailers, they don't cost much more than regular car tyres and are readily available.

We've had good results from Hankook RA08 tyres over the past 15 years, never had a problem or a blowout.

Everything depends on the weight of the caravan the tyres are fitted too, so load index number of the tyres chosen is most important, not how they are made.

Two things about 6 or 8'plys' first they ain't anymore! 5 and 7 now so again it's not 'everyone should fit 8 ply' because that's an outdated term, and the load index number is king.
Second, 8ply tyres are the strongest so used on the heavier vans, if yours is not a heavy van it does not require 8ply, really light vans are happy on just 'car' tyres. Yet again then, load index is most important and matching that to the vans weight.

Where care is needed is allowing some excess of load so the tyre is not worked too it's maximum, recommendation is 10% extra. So MTPLM weight of van + 10% and pick a tyre with a load index number comfortably above that total without going daft!
Finally, don't expect the caravans manufacturers fitted tyres to conform, most until recently fitted barely capable tyres and upgrading from these is often pretty well essential!

Having said all that, your probably looking for a tyre with a load index of a minimum 99 to a maximum of 102 where the tyres physical size closely matches the original, which will in fact be '8ply' in your case
