hi all,
my van is on 2005 tyres , 1 is showing no signs of cracking and looks fine, and the other has slight signs of cracking, should i replace them? i have 2 others which look fine with no signs of wear. 1 of which looks like its never been on a van but i think they're both 97's , i dont use my van alot and even when i do i never tend to go more than about 40 miles from home, how important is this 5 year thing, can someone advise me please?
thanks

If you don't happen to use your van a lot then your tyres will have flat spots due to being in a stationary position most of the time. If this happens then the advice is to change them after 5 years or sooner but if you use your van on a regular basis then it could be stretched to 7 years maximum.

If one is showing signs of cracking and they are 7 years old I would change both. As for 15 year old tyres - 15 is fine for malt whisky but not tyres.

Buy new tyres would be my advise.

New tyres at the first signs of deterioration, not worth taking a chance.

we changed all three at 5 - 6 years old,why worry about it.the expense of a punture overides the cost of a breaksdown.plus a blowout could and can damage your floor / fridge /  wheel arch,it does happen. dont forget to balance them all.

hi all
many thanks for all replies and, takisawa, glad your ok, that looks nasty and i must say has rather swayed my decision somewhat, i have since found out my local caravan parts supplier bought all the excess stuff from such as abi etc when they ceased to be and have some brand new tyres on wheels in their stores which have never been on a van, i know the codes on them will prob say they are old but they should be ok should'nt they? thought they were reasonable at £39 a piece, what u reckon?

UV and heat affect tyres, so unless you know that the dealer has stored the wheels in a temperature and UV controlled environment how can you trust them?

I think it boils down to the fact that there is nothing as good as new rubber as far as caravan tyres go.

could be be 4 or 5 years old before you buy them a total waste of money imho.you will be no better off than you are now tyre wise.long time since ABI stopped making touring vans.

I would not trust tyres over the age of 4 years no matter the milage or how well they looked.
