Hi

I done a full reseal of my last caravan, and what a job, hours and hours spent cleaning off old mastic Remeber to finish off by cleaing the area with meths, this removes any white spirts and ensures that your masic bonds to the body of the caravan. I used stainless steel screws as well.

I didnt mind doing the work on a 15 year old van but expecting to do it again on one 5 years old. At the moment everything is dry and ok, but I just know that this is where it is most likely to start letting in.

I have thought about the ends, there are D end caps you can buy, or just bung up the ends with sikaflex 512, this is realy the best stuff you can buy, slightly dearer at about £9 a go but worth it. I used it on my last van, along with the mastic on a roll.

The idea of using sika was that it would fully fill the D section and ensure that the D section has a full bond, mastic on a roll would leave hollows between each screw head. I just think that it a crap finish zand detail for any caravan maker to leave.

I didn't remove the roof rail, there was no need. I simply bedded a plastic cover plate over the aluminium rail that had exposed screw heads that sat within a grove allowing water to gather. My roof rails ran from side to side, one at the from and one at the rear and were easily reached using a ladder.

To access the roof id its a flat roof you could place scaffold boards across the with of the roof. If its a boat type roof you could try leaning a ladder against the side of the caravan making sure it is secure at the bottom so that it doesnt move or a couple of aluminium towers either side of the van with a youngmans board over the top of it.
