After - brightened up
New curtains
New floor with mat
I was lucky that I have a working sewing machine, and a neighbour to help me make them properly. The curtains had to be made from the large ones I bought. In all I have used about 18 metres of fabric, very wide! Being a linen mix it does crease , but I really couldnt afford proper upholstery fabric .I have kept the front window curtains longer, so that when we sleep they dont dangle over our nose! This does interfere with items on the table though, so I will be coming up with a plan to rectify that, perhaps a very thin flat cushion to pin them back leaving plenty of space for our head pillows. We dont take anything apart anyway, we sleep on one side each with the dog in the middle, sooo much easier. I went for light colours, to give it a fresh feel, and the green and blue in the curtains reflects the colours we usually wear. It was great to take up the old green floral carpet and put down fresh floor. The underlay that we had makes it feel soft underfoot and stops it feeling cheap. The paint was simple good quality emulsion that went on well over the textured wall paper and freshened it all up. In time we may change the fittings to satin chrome etc but for now on our tight budget this has made a big improvement and made it very pleasant to be in. Just time to finish the bathroom which is basically a clean fresh cupboard now, with our freestanding loo. We wash at the kitchen sink instead. Husband is beginning work on the window frames and exterior bits that wont clean up with normal detergent, by the way, Autoglym vinyl cleaner works really well on rubber trim, brings it back to black instantly, best buy so far. So many thanks to everyone who has posted pictures of their make overs, it inspired me, and gave me the courage to have a go, and especially the advice that suggested covering is better than ripping off if you dont want to ruin original features.
