I have a SPRITE MAJOR 1987. It does not smell damp but I ahve noticed a line of swollen wallboard along one side.At first I though tyhe side seam was laeking but I have now determined it is the front right window.

As I started tolook (as one does) I noticed a few areas that are possibly suffering from the after affects of dampness.

I have fixed the delaminated floor (or nearly) and I have fixed a few places where it can be seen that the outerrails has come away and broken the seal to the aluminium seam.

However, looking at the side windwo I can see that tehre is a small (4" section of rotted wood in one (curved) corner. I can also see that the wall board has softened under the cover. Here is where my thoughts on pragmatism come in.

I can reseal the window rubber, Open a section of wallboard in a cupboard, dry the side of the van and leave it at that or I can

Remove the Widow, Remove the seal, cut out a section of wallboard (which is always a pain unless anyone can advise a better way), repalce the rotten wood and then refix everything.  Given the Van's age (25 Years) is it worth undertaking all that?

If if you are happy with the 'van apart from the damp problem its worth a proper fix, as you'll be even happier with it afterwards, knowing that its all solid and sound.

All I do with my mid 80s 'van is to squirt Sikaflex in any external gap I can find. Provided the water can no longer get in, the interior will eventually dry out.

Perhaps, but probably not. The water has no where to go since it is trapped between two impervious layers. Better to find the centre of the damp area and to drill one or two 15mm holes in the wall board and cover them with a vent. that at least will give the water somewhere to go.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
