Hi all,

Hope someone might be able to help? I have our Abbey Piper 1994 5 berth and I finally connected it to the mains to try the lights etc.. out.. This is where the problem begins, all the power sockets work, however the lights don't seem to? All of them.. I have checked the bulbs and they all seem ok?

Now, someone suggested the caravan should have a control panel? However I can't see this in the manual? I have found the circuit breaker and all seems ok. But can't see the fuse box?

Does anyone know if there is a control panel that selects different parts of the electrical system? Such as turning the lights on/off?

All I can see is the one for the battery that says Caravan / off / battery and next to it.. Pump on & off. And a voltage meter.

It is an Abbey Piper 1994 5 berth.

Thanks all..

Danny

there will be a fuse board somewhere ,its either hidden behind the control panel or under the seats .
just a thought DO you have a charged 12v battery fitted ,if not thats your problem as the lights are 12v .you don't mention the battery so that makes me suspicious .
the mains only works the sockets ,power from the mains go through a battery charger that charges up the battery which in turn runs the lights .you should have your switch set to caravan and the voltage meter should read around 13+ volts

On a 1994 caravan there are probably only two 240 volt lights mounted as wall lights with pull cords underneath which are normally above the seating either side. The remaining lights will be all be 12 volts which will be on the ceiling and in the shower/toilet compartment. When you connect the battery always connect the + (positive) first and - (negative) last and visa versa when you disconnect. Once you have a new fully charged battery connected the 12 volt lights should operate but always try to keep your battery fully charged at all times otherwise you will eventually reduce the life of your leisure battery.

no problem ,don't leave the battery connected all winter .we have taken ours out and i charge it in the garage weekly just a few hours to keep the charge .if your going to mains hook up only sites a car battery will suffice instead of a leisure one save you pounds .

Hi i would thought your 12v lights would work without a battery connected thats if your charger is working ok, also check where your battery comes into your van there's sometimes a fuse near there.  cheers Stan

it will if its a more modern unit ,but there could be underlying problems as well such as a failed charger unit or a fuse gone ,first step as i suggested is a charged battery ,then eliminate the others from there

WARNING

Please remember , if you take your battery out ( no battery ) don't leave the battery terminals in the battery locker touching each other. Put the + (red) terminal in a bag or something so it can't touch the neutral. If they are touching and you power up the van via hookup you will have a short across the output of the charger !

Most caravans will still operate the lights direct from the charger without a battery fitted ( technically no longer termed a charger if there's no battery , it would now be called a 'power supply' ). The available amps direct from the "power supply" will be quite high so if the terminals are touching things will get very hot very quickly should a breaker not throw. Most modern chargers will have protection fitted in their output circuit. Some older electronics stuff doesn't. Something will likely blow , such as a cut-out or an internal fuse in the charger . Whatever happens it could potentially leave you with a headache
