Hello,

I'm planning to buy an old 'van, dismantle it and build a nice hut on wheels for my brother. It will be 7ft x 16ft.
I know that Alko chassis are meant to be good and I'd like to get an old van for about £400 or less with an Alko chassis. Is there any particular make or model I can focus on , where I'd be sure to be buying an Alko chassis?
I've looked at a couple already but one was not galvanised (essential) and the other one the vendor told me it was Alko, but I could not see any maker's plate on the chassis to confirm.
I don't want to be shopping blind for too long. Can I narrow my search by looking at a particular model? help please if you can. Thanks? Wul.

Very old caravans may be on B&B or Peak but that is going way back into history. CI used own chassis up until about 1991 and Lunar had their own chassis (brought in) until a bit later. I think all others have been on Alko or BPW since then and tbh there is not a lot to choose between them as they are both rather large German industrial companies with a reputation to maintain.

Thanks,
I had a look at the caravan breakers site but it looks like a retail outlet rather than a forum.
Birder; are you saying that any caravan built after 1991 or thereabouts is pretty much sure to have a German made, galvanised chassis?

The 'van/hut will be situated right next to the sea on the west coast of Scotland so will need to withstand salt water and horizontal rain. It will need to be moved twice a year, so I want something that will still be roadworthy after a few years of sitting in an exposed location.
PS: been using this forum for years as a camper but cannot get my old username to work (failing memeory)

Many caravans going right back to mid 80s have galvanised Al-Ko chassis. ABI Monza & Maurader do & also old Adria as well & are often on ebay for only a few £100s. You best bet if you just want a chassis might be a caravan breaker. list here

Thanks for the advice, that's useful to know. I went ahead and bought an old 'van for £100 with a galvanised CI chassis from a breaker. Not marked as Alko but seeems to be German judging by the info on the hitch plate.
I'll be inteersted to see how the caravan is constructed as I dismantle it.

Nope if it is CI it is not an Alko chassis. It will be one of there own CI made heavy duty beasts with Knott components such as hubs and hitch etc.
