My Elddis Odyssey has one of these clear plastic, torpedo like water filters which I have been told was fitted new during the pre-delivery service to me last September.

To my absolute knowledge not a drop of water has passed through it or the system since it was fitted.

My question is that in wanting to clean the system with either Puriclean or some sterilising tablets that I have, will this do any harm to the functions of the filter?

Yes. Simple answer. The alkaline cleaning solution reacts with the carbon filter. Just replace it with a straight pipe.

On the end of the filter with the big rubber seal.you can pull it apart and take out the charcoal bag then,put the filter back in to flush the system.I dont drink the water in the van so i just keep the charcoal bag out,saves buying a new filter all the time..

I removed the filter in my van as well since we don't drink water from the van system. Oh and we had two crack over two consecutive winters, and at £30ish quid a pop replaced it with a length of pipe.

We don't drink the water from the tap at home without running it through a Brita jug first. There's a really high content of chlorine in it which makes it taste like swimming pool water so we certainly wouldn't drink water in the van's system except to boil it for tea or coffee.

With the caravan we have the Aquaroll mains water hook up so our caravan water is not static for very long.

The filter should be replaced after 3 weeks according to my manual. That's going on £200 a year on water filters.

I took ours out.

I don't know what kind of filter you are using that costs that kind of money DaveCoaches. Mine is the Truma Crystal 2 filter cartridge which is currently for sale in the LeisureOutlet catalogue for £7.49.

My handbook recommends change after 30 days use.

Methinks that maybe flushing the system through with Puriclean or some other chemical with the OLD cartridge in then fitting the new one once this operation is complete......

If you were to flush the system with the old filter in wouldnt you have the crap from the old filter contaminating the clean water your putting in.

I removed my old filter at end of last season while winterising. Couple of weeks ago I fitted a length of pipe in its place just so I could flush through, sterilise, flush a couple of more times and then I fitted the new filter ready to go for the new season. All seems well. You can buy a short length of hose off ebay (1m long) for a couple of quid delivered. A lot cheaper than ruining your filter and you can use it again next year.

So did you just ram a pipe in, fill the system and let it drain to wash it out or did you run it through the taps??

I'd drained down the system when winterising and removed the old filter. I placed a little kitchen roll under the two pipe ends just to catch any drops. A couple of weeks ago, I first eetrilised the barrel using some baby sterilising tablets (mine were from Wilkinsons), then let it air dry. On the day, I fitted a bit of pipe that I had bought on ebay to match what was fitted (the diameter and type is important and not the colour, in fact I could only get hold of the red striped one at short notice). I feilled the barrel with water and the requisite amount of Milton, fitted up the pump and let it run (water heater off obviously), opened up the taps to let the water run through the system, then turned it all off for 15 mins. Then I drained down- opening taps to central position to help the process. Then I repeated the process without the milton just to flush through. Hope this helps. It worked for us, but no doubt someone will have some different tips for you:) Sorry for any typos, I have a problem with my sight right now.
