Hi all, as the title says my fridge isn't working. The light on my consumer unit (I think) doesn't light up. I've tested the voltage at the fridge and I'm getting 3 volts. I'm getting 3 volts at the back of my consumer unit. Is it poorly? I think I've checked the correct fuses. All Ok

sounds like the element as many go this time of year. if the green light is not on it could be a main fuse.have you checked the trip box? when damp they can trip out. is everything else working on EHU,electric?

Yeah I've checked, surely if it was anything to do with the fridge itself I would have full voltage to it and I don't. Ive got one main trip switch, one for the charger and one for the sockets. All Ok? ??

3 volts? How are you testing this exactly?
A bit more info if you can please eg.,
  • Measuring mains voltage - where and how?
  • Where are you measuring on the fridge?
  • Have you got your meter set correct?
  • Obvious I know, but easy to overlook - is the EHU connected?
  • Is fridge switched over to mains use?

At the back of my consumer unit. I think that's what it's called. I have a wire that's labelled fridge+ 12v. I only have 3 volts there. Behind my fridge I have the same colour wires going to it. With an earth and 3 volts ???.
If everything before the fridge was Ok then surely I'd have full voltage at the fridge. As I don't then I'm thinking my fridge is Ok?
I'm testing it with my snap on volt meter

the fridge will only work on 12v when the Grey plug is connected to the car & the car engine is running. Normally you need to be hooked up to the mains or running the fridge on gas.Have you checked the battery voltage at the terminals? you should have 12.8 volts across the pos neg terminals

Or are you saying that you are on ehu But still have no supply to the consumer unit ??? have you tried the 240v lights in the van?? if these do not work disconnect the EHU lead & check the wire connections in the lead also check the lead for possible internal breaks in the cable

I've got my hook up lead plugged into house. Lights all work, battery charger working, with the battery condition light on Green. 13.2v   at battery when charger is on. On my consumer unit I've got a switch for charger that lights up when switched, and a switch for fridge that doesn't light up when switched

If you have it connected to EHU why are you trying to run the fridge on 12V?

I may be doing something wrong, with the switch either way on the fridge it doesn't work. I was just stating what voltage I did have in the system?

What are you classing as the consumer unit? I'd refer to the mains circuit breaker/RCD unit (more commonly called fuse board) as the consumer unit. There should be no instances of 12V DC voltage in or near this.

If you're looking at extra low DC voltages (12V) then I'd assume it's the control panel (not sure what the preffered name is). From my experience the fridge will only get 12V dc power when connected to a car via the 12S socket (engine running). The power draw of a fridge is that high that it would flatten any leisure battery within hours so really only designed for long term operation on mains or gas.

If you're finding 3v on the 12v feed when not connected to a car then it might just be an overly sensitive meter or you have a bit of spurious voltage floating around. Likely nothing to worry about but might be worth a further look especially if you're having charging/battery issues.

The fridge should have 2 switches. One for 12V operation (connected to car only, usually red) one for mains (usually green) and controls for gas (dial plus ignition button). Mine also has a seperate fused connection unit for mains under a locker to give isolation.  This is just my observations and might vary depending on make/model.

As has been rightly pointed out by others above, the 12v operation of the fridge is only available for when connected to the car during the tow (engine running etc, via 12s socket).

Maybe the switch you refer to is the 12v car switch. Most vans have a habitation relay that directs 12v to the fridge (when connected to the car), but perhaps you have to set manually in your van.

My fridge is an Electrolux, it's got a switch and igniter on left and a power switch on right. Middle is off, down is 12v and up is a plug symbol. Am I right in thinking that with the ehu plugged in I switch it up to the plug and that's it. It should go cold?

Right chaps, just had another look. My mains cable from my circuit breaker in wardrobe goes to my control panel overhead above the front seat. At the back of this I have all my wiring. The cable that is labelled mains in has 240v with ehu in. The cable next to it is labelled mains out (to my fridge I believe) this. Has no voltage at it? Am I on right track or Barking up wrong tree?
