My Luna handbook directed me to read the Service Handbook for tyre pressures. The said handbook lists most models in the Lexon, Quaser and Clubman range a pressure of 65psi for the 185 x R14c tyres fitted to most of these models. BUT I HAVE JUST BEEN INFORMED BY MY CARAVAN SERVICE ENGINEERS that the pressure has to be calculated from this "recommended" pressure according the MTPLM of each particular model. This takes my tyre pressures down to only 52psi.(80%)This is apparently because the original tyres are capable of carrying UP TO 1800kgs but my Lunas is 20% lighter than the tyre's maximum capabilities. SO WHO IS RIGHT. The Lunar handbook or my service department?????

Firstly I would have a look at the tyre wall and see what the max. tyre pressure is. If it's stated as less than 65 psi. then I would go with the advice of the caravan service engineer but if it's more than 65 psi. then I would tend to go with the service handbook. It probably also depends on what tyres have been fitted but I only ever have commercial tyres fitted (as advised in the handbook) and my tyres are 175 x 14 with recommended tyre pressure of 50 psi. You could always contact 'Lunar' at the link below and send them an e-mail or phone the number at the top of the page and ask for their customer services for advice.

It was only the recent service showing ALL tyres, including spare, at 52psi that I questioned it and was told it was a mathematical calculation they carried-out to establish the pressure for my particular van. I will follow-up all suggestions as we off to France soon. My tyres are marked "185R14C 104/107N Max load single axle 900kg. 1985lbs. at 450kpa 65psi cold" and were manufactured in sept 2011 and they are Kargo Max C by name. I believe the kpa may be the metric alternative to psi. 900kg x 2 gives an axle maximum of 1800kg and my van's MTPLM is 1440kg. To me 52psi seems aweful low especially having driven 2000 miles on what I thought must be right ie 65psi according to the Service handbook's "General Data".

All sites are VERY interesting. The mind boggles when you read them. Bit late now but I'll email Lunar with my doubts in the morning...thanks for the input. If I get anything positive from Lunar I'll post it before we go.

The maximum pressure stated on any size tyre is just that, generally it's the pressure to suit the tyres maximum stated load, not always though, reinforced type tyres often state a higher pressure than the correct pressure for the maximum stated load.

However 185R14C Li102 are commercial type tyres and maximum load/pressure are equal to each other, any less load then requires a corresponding drop in pressure from the maximum of 65psi.
However again, the 'calculation' as often suggest does not give an accurate pressure, only an approximation. It is though always higher than the correct pressure so safe as far as tyres won't be under inflated.

As far as caravan manufactures always giving correct pressures, the only correct pressure is to suit the load carried. If then as in this case, the load is 20% less, and Lunar is stating 65psi, their WRONG!!

UNLESS that is, the the van is so badly designed, the load on one side is so greatly heavier than the other side, the heavy sides tyres is fully loaded?, in which case the lighter loaded tyre would be massively over inflated?

I hope not though as I certainly would not like to be towing such a van!!!!

So an accurate load/pressure chart HEREand you can judge who's right and who's wrong?!

ARC. You've given us even more food for thought. Yes it does SEEM as though the "specifications" in my Lunar service handbook are listing the MAXIMUM tyre pressure and as your recommended website suggests you shouldn't exceed 90% of the tyres’ maximum pressure to avoid a blow-out. Another site listed above seems to suggest better tyre life, performance and fuel economy by running at 10% above the ACTUAL loads requirements. e.g. My Lunar MTPLM is only 1440kg and the tyres (with a 65psi max) are intended for axle loads up to a max 1800kg. Therefore my Lunar is only 80% of the tyre's maximum load i.e. 52psi as recommended by my service department. Add the 10% recommended by the site mentioned above for better performance comes to about 57psi. Your site says never exceed 58.5psi.(90%) in the case of a tyre with a 65psi maximum. So that’s not far out and that's what I want to find-out from Lunar before we leave on holiday. Readers should find out their own pressures and not take my estimate as correct.

I'm now at a bit of a loss myself?

I don't know about anything else, I go by the chart I provided, that being Tyresafes original chart taken from it's booklet I've been using for 15 years without issue
I do know you seem to be misinterpreting the 10%?, it is to offset the rigors of use, or indeed lack of use fitted to a caravan, nothing more nothing less should be read into it.
I can also be taken that tyres fitted to the car are never fully loaded so why would caravan manufacturers, as was until recently universally the case?!
Another thing about car manufactures, they test tyres and tune suspension to suit the tyres they choose to use. They can also fine tune the 'generic chart pressures' to exactly suit, all economically impossible for caravan manufacturers.

Regards your tyres then, 185R14C has a load index of 102 thats a maximum load of 1700kg per pair.
So from the chart, the required pressure for 1440kg is 54psi, there should be no doubt about that!

Thank you ARC That's what I'll use, Tried finding the article mentioning adding 10% to the base figure but cant find it. Have emailed Lunar pointing-out their listing.

The Paragraph at the top of the pressure chart is the tyre manufactures explanation for not using above 90% of the tyres stated capacity.
As it's not particularly in their interest to say it, it's specific to caravan use, plus they made them so they should know, I see no reason to question their reasoning and would put it above all other!

On a further issue regarding Caravan manufactures in general and their advice on tyres, they insist balancing them is not required.
I've been involved in various forms of mechanical engineering all my life, armed with that wealth, I cannot think of one tiny bit of reasoning that might lead to such a view, that is, that I cannot then dismiss under an avalanche of opposite reasoning, it will then always be utter nonsense!

thanks for that link arc ,its given me the data that i needed without going into a einstein equation mine works out
175R 13 C tyres fitted ,van fully laden weight approx 1100 kg so tyre pressure should be 44lbs psi .
sounds right to me many thanks .and if its wrong i got tyrons in both wheels anyway

Maybe Black fox? you don't mention the 'load index' number on your tyres and the link only gives pressures for Li94, this being the 6ply version of this size and type of tyre.

If then your tyres are Li97 (8ply version)? then 44psi is a little low, 44psi being suitable for 1070kg, 46psi would be right for 1100kg.

I think this possible confusion is the reason Tyresafe stopped printing the tables?, please then everyone ensure your tyres match the pressure table your using exactly
If your not sure please feel free to ask
