Have recently bought a Lunar Meteorite S. The handbook claims it to be a 1991 model. The handbook states that the wheel/tyre size should be 155x13 SR13. However the van is actually fitted with 145 R12's (all 3 tyres inc the spare are the same size).
Lunar were not able to advise when asked about wheel sizes.
Not 100% sure this is actuallly a 1991 model. Does anyone know if Lunar ever sold meteorites with 145 x 12's ?
If not, does anyone know if this smaller tyre is safe to use on this caravan?
I have taken it on several trips with no problems towing it, however I would like some reassurance that the tyres are safe to use.
You need to check load index on side of tyre, after the tyre size on sidewall there should be a double digit number followed by a letter. The number is the load index. here. For example if load index is 79 then tyre can support 437kg, so leaving a bit of a safety margin those tyres would be ok on a caravan up to a bit over 800kg all up.
Also tyres should not be too old, about 6yrs max whatever the wear or they could be perished & blow out at motorway speeds with flailing tread damaging caravan.
tyres of unknown history should be changed for safety anyway,the tyre size given of
145 x 12 / 145 x 10 / 145 x 13 were mini wheel sizes,(a few in my shed.) 4 holes.i used to use them to build my trailers because the suspension was made to fit them. www.towsure.co.uk wheels and tyres.the 12 in are safe if in good condition and not too old and cracking at sides and in the tred.
facts
code on towsure TY50
145 x 10 WHEEL AND TYRE
MAX LOAD 827 LBS NOT KGS
PCD = X 1.7012 HOLE CENTRES
X 4 HOLES
ON NON R/F TYRES I USE 30 PSI. R/F COULD BE 40 PSI CHECK.

------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
Also, I have since checked the age of the tyres and they turn out to be a shade under 7 years old. Needless to say a new set are on order and the van will not be moving until the new tyres are fitted.
