My wife and i bought our first van (Compass Omega 430/4)and are doing our first trip over to St Andrews at the end of the month for two days, and we are really looking forward to it. We decided to get the van out today and drive up the A82 Loch Lomond just to make sure all is good with the van. The plan was to drive up to Inverbeg, turn round then stop in one of the big lay bys on the side of the loch for a cuppa then back home. We left home in Lennoxtown to head out to Balloch then up and onto A82, unfortunately we were on the road no more than 20 minutes when the RH tyre punctured. As soon as i realised something was wrong i was lucky enough to be able to pull safely off the main road to have a look. The tyre was completely wrecked and i was on the rim, could i have been towing with a puncture and not realised until the tyre shredded itself. I managed to jack up and fit the spare, turn round and go straight home keeping our fingers crossed we didn't have any more flats. I noticed the spare did not look healthy at all with small cracks on the sidewall. Anyway im going to replace all three tyres but what tyres to buy, im not quite sure. The van has Continental 175 R13 86T tyres on. Should i replace with the same? or does anyone recommend a better tyre. If nothing else i now have experience of dealing with a flat at the side of the road, and it has taught me the value of keeping a tool kit in the van or car when towing as i had to call my son and get him to bring tools out to us. I also had to use his jack as my terrano's bottle jack wouldn't go under as the van was lying so low. Scissor jack required.

Load index of 86 gives you 530kg on each tyre so ok for your caravan. So replace like with like or tyre with higher load index. Its a bit of an outdated size so you might not have much choice of tyre makes.

Sound like the tyres you had on where old I imagine most caravan tyres are or should be replaced before they are worn
5 to 6 years the tyre should be replaced IMHO
175 13 are fairly old but you can get I have them on my Ifor Williams trailer look for 175 13c 8 ply or something like that you may struggle to find 175 13 86t but 8 ply is a commercial tyre eg van if it says anything like 97/95 or 100/102 they will be fine Maxxis and Hankook should be available online for about 40 maybe 50 £

Thanks guys, the tyre that got me home is a 4 ply, i remember looking at it. I will replace them with what you suggested Mark and hopefuly i wont have any more trouble. Does anyone use Ultraseal or simillar products which immediately repair punctures. I have it inside my Motorbike tyres in fact i forgot it was in there, wonder if it's worth getting more for my new caravan tyres. Anyone have any views on the use of such products.

a good 8 ply tyre will do for you.

the 175R13C 97 (8ply) is probably the best choice due to being well up to the job and readily available, pressure required for 1000kg is 40psi

All tyres though must be the same so you must change all the tyres.
